I'll toss out "just another worthless experience", to this OLD thread
Upon Rebuilding the INTAKE ONLY on a long gone 94 22re....
The truck ran like a champ then started stumbling a lot,
The injectors had been sent out, mapped and cleaned, yet "somebody" didn't get all the junk out of hoses and fuel rail because each and every injector had bad patterns and need to be re-cleaned, I had to drink an extra beer for that screw up
Long question short-
I wonder if the injectors went to pot after all the parts were out and some small particles jammed them up even more???

I can say that doing the project as I am doing ( started with little or no mechanical skills), I have spent somewhere around $200 to $250 on parts....ENGNBLDR timing cover , timing kit with steel guides, oil pump,oil pump, gasket kit and new head bolts.
I'm still doing it, still learning too.
so far, the crankshaft bolt and the oil pan have been the 2 extremely difficult jobs to overcome, getting all the head bolts out was a little tough because they we gunked in.
details, details, pay attention to the details......bag and label each and every bolt,part etc....try to do slightly better than me me the " bolt for the thing under the thing by the EFI" and so on.....I have my work cut out for me on that stuff.
tools I bought, maybe accounted for another $100......3 torque wrenches..1/2'' drive, 3/8'' drive and 1/4'' drive for the inch/pounds bolts. a "breaker bar", a piece of pipe, a 19mm 6 point impact socket (for the crankshaft bolt, anything less will break...ask me how I know.)
Most of my time has been spent looking at the engine from this angle ,that angle, underneath and examining each and every part that comes off and trying to understand what does what.
FSM, Haynes and Chiltons at my side and YOTATECH as my primary resource.

Thanks for all the replies. My rebuild won't be happening for a while... if it happens at all. But for now I'm going to make a list of the parts and tools that I'll need to aquire. Is a 1/4" torque wrench needed? I have a 1/2" and 3/8" already. That and more jack stands looks like the only tools I'll be need to purchase.

the inch / lbs one cost about $19 from harbor freight.

A basic set of metric wrenches and sockets and you can have tht engine out in about a hours time..
they have a basic tool kit a harbor freight for about 150.00 and it comes in a plastic case made by pittsburg. tools

got my set at ACE for about $15 and it's a basic SAE / Metric set. and aside from buying some deep sockets, a few extensions, a breaker bar and the torque wrenches, it's served me well.

finished my engine swap unlike you i didnt lable nothing and now haveing trouble gettin it started well running itll fire but stall i hope things go better for you like u i am no mechanic but it was fun i did the same with my power steering. and since your not pulling the motor it should be fine where its at intill you go to put the ex man. bake on. it might get in the way puting bolts on

I had to buy a few tools too, but not much. A basic set should get you by.
Grand total came to about $869. Things went really smooth for me. I didn't break much so I didn't have to buy a lot of extra stuff. My goal was to keep it under $1000, so I left a little wiggle room. PM me if you have any specific questions.
