22re idle problem

Hello everyone,

I was wandering if someone can help me to figure it out what is wrong with my engine. The problem is this: when the engine is cold it idles very low (about 500rpm) and dies if you don't keep a bit of throttle on and when it's hot instead it idles high (about 1500 rpm).
Is that the choke not working properly?

Thanks

if it's re, then no choke, but it does have a cold start injector....... but it kind of sounds like you need to pull and read your spark plugs. if they are real worn, or you have weak spark, they will not burn the extra fuel needed for normal plugs sparking normally.

Idle air control valve. What was wrong with mine. Others have had the idle screw with an air leak around the threads. Search my friend. There is allot of reading you must do.

On the high idle side, I have seen the dashpot hold the throttle up to where it cant shut closed all the way like it should.

I dropped my phone in the lake today so I copied this picture. On the high idle side, I meant that the high idle could be caused by the Throttle could not be coming all the way back to the closed position.

See the spring on the left side of the bottom part? It pulls the throttle closed. What I have seen in the past the plunger on the Dashpot sometimes either does not let it go all the way down or just needs adjusted. Try to manually close the Throttle to the closed position.

The black, rubber cushion is where I would suspect is causing your high idle by not letting the throttle close. Sometimes a good cleaning and lubricating helps fix it.

Just above that spring, on top of the Throttle Body, there is a flat blade screw that is the idle adjustment. Have you tried to adjust it down that way?

The correct way to do it would be to adjust your valves, jumper Te/E1 and setting your timing and adjustments. I am not sure on the correct procedure without looking it up in my FSM or Haynes Manual, but adjusting that flat blade screw is what raises or sets your idle.

I still have to follow the manual for setting everything but valves out of adjustment can make a big difference. All hoses routed correctly? How is the Intake System as far as cleanliness? https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f199...l#post51647988 All hoses clear of carbon?

Have you burped the system? I raise the front end as high as possible and with the radiator cap off, let the thermostat cycle 3 or 4 times to get air out of the system. I am 6 foot tall the radiator cap is at shoulder level to me. Air in the system tends to cause a 22re to rev up and down but may possibly be an issue for you.

cleaned today air intake and filter box, i ll get a new air filter tomorrow just in case. i thought about the valves cause seems to me that they are making too much noise but maybe is normal sound of that engine. how do i know if the are not regulated properly?

Check the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), maybe stuck or damaged contacts.
