Yo Suprasb,
Glad to hear your 22RE is up and running again. I about freaked out when you had problems once you fired it up. I'm doing the same thing you are and I'm about half way done.
I noticed in your thread that you did not pull the oil pan off, or am i wrong?? That's probably why you had to flush your engine again. I pulled mine the other night cause i had coolant dumping into cylinder one. My oil pan had a lot of coolant in it. Hopefully I have most of it out of the oiling system now so when i fire it up it will be ok. I'll flush the oil anyway shortly after just to make sure.

Because you had to flush your engine again to get the remaining coolant out you might want to pull your PCV valve out and check it. It might be clogged from the left over coolant in the oil. Spray it out with brake cleaner if needed to free it up, if it rattles when you shake it then it's good.

Hahah I wanted to see if anyone would catch that. All the pics were taken with my iPhone and I flipped one of them to be clever. But you can tell if you look closely.

Another noob here. First off, thanks to everyone for making YotaTech such a great resource. I've read a metric tonne on here while working on the truck.
I basically did all the same work as suprasb (new head, timing chain, chain guides, and water pump) with the same results: the oil and coolant mixed like crazy right away. The first time I thought I blew the new head gasket, and not having my compression tester (got left back home in Oregon) I just went ahead and replaced it. Two of the head bolts came out with a decent amount of oil/coolant mix on them so I made sure to give all the holes a good cleaning. The chain cover was in good shape as the plastic guides hadn't worn through. Used dye to test the block surface for cracks, and I put a straight edge and feeler gauges to it and all was well.
I got everything back together a couple hours ago. Lo and behold! . . . the oil and coolant are still mixing . . . and in a hurry. I ran it just long enough to get to the temp needle up a little and check the timing (dead on first try, kinda neat). I wish this were Candy Cane Land and my 22re had chocolate milkshake for oil. Everything would be pretty swell then. But I digress.
Surpasb, how exactly did you do your oil flush, if you don't mind? A quick google search came up with a wide variety of methods and tricks: leave old oil filter on, use special oil filter attachment, use diesel oil, don't flush at all if you want to go to Heaven. I let it sit awhile before redoing the HG so that all the oil would filter down as much as possible and there was a lot of oil/coolant separation. Could there really be that much of the "original" milkshake left to cause some much mixing now? Your results would seem to point to a yes. I was beginning to think that I crossed a hose somewhere. When the head originally cracked there was no oil/coolant mixing so this is dumb.
Post feels on the long side. Sorry, just a bit frustrated.

What is this part?
Hey, everyone. Just finished a head gasket change myself. I know, I haven't posted anything since the truck was wrecked last year. At any rate, I got everything back together, only to find out that the 'gas filter' had been broken. I'm trying to find out what this part REALLY is, as in, what it's named so I can get a new one. I have it circled in the pic below...which is a BEFORE pic. (The truck had overheated & blown the upper hose, in addition to the head gasket. Had rusty water all over the place. All clean now.)
Thank a million!

I busted mine on my carb truck, filled the broken side with a little epoxy and then used some vacuum tees to attach the other line. All it really is is a 3 port vacuum tee with a small screen in it to filter the air. I guess to filter solids in the case fuel makes it into the vacuum lines ???

Thanks again...
Here's mine. I am currently trying to rig the vacuum lines back on it...basically with super glue. We'll see how that works...
Have the new one on order. Hope it gets here quickly!
Again, thanks for the info.
