22re exhaust leek get kinda anoying
ok well i have an exhaust leek were my down pipe and exhaust manifold connect. i know its there because i have had my down pipe resealed twice and it slowly comes back in about a week after the new seals. It isn't bad really, it just ticks when i give throttle, kinda annoying haha. so do i have a a crappy manifold? or is this part of the clatterbox part of owning i 22re lol. Btw it isn't my valves though i have a slight tick from them but not the big deal. what should i dooo? header? seal it with a ton of silicon?

i used an exhaust sealant stuff...its a paste and it dries hard! it works GREAT for all the leaks i've ever had...even stopped a 20r header from leaking on a 22R..
i say get a header though...just to have that extra "umf"

not sure abe about the bracket i will have to check tomorrow.
hmm sounds interesting camo! would i just put around the flange or would i have to re seal the manifold and down pipe? hope not i have done it twice and its getting annoying haha. o and yes if i can get old santee claus to get me a header hehe

the sealant- you'd separate the upper manifold and down pipe, apply the sealant, then reconnect. it's a sodium-borosilicate compound, and if I remember correctly, is very resiliant to high temps but is really only meant as a temporary solution to the problem since it crystalizes to a very hard compound that is brittle so it breaks down rather easily. I may be wrong, but if it's not expensive could be a viable solution to your problem.

What nuts are you using on the studs? I used the brass ones recommended to me and they would get loose in about two weeks of driving, I also don't have that little bracket that Abe mentioned. I ended up getting steel grade 5 nuts and put them on there and it didn't leak at all. In fact they were still tight as hell when I pulled the whole mess out last week to put in my header.

Abe's right...if you don't replace that bracket, it'll just shake itself loose and reestablish the leak again and again. My truck came to me w/o bracket and leaking just as you describe. I had trouble sourcing a new or used bracket at the time, so I improvised a temporary solution with SS hose clamps that's still working 8 years later. If you wish, I could shoot and attempt to post photo of my band-aid...

thanks! its just stock manifold, new oem downpipe, new cat, cherrybomb glasspack, and after that its new pipe! it used to be side exit and it was louder but i had a exhaust shop mount it all up and pipe it out the back.

I used Fel Pro gaskets, they are rings, and the fit in the recess on the manifold flange and seal to the flange around the pipes at the downpipe. Fixed mine right up. It was under $5.00 too!

sounds exactly like mine, annoying as hell. I've tried doubling the gaskets but that only works for a while then it gets loose because you can't get the pipe and manifold to mate with 2 gaskets in there. I think I'll try cutting some sheet metal gaskets to take up some space and make a single OEM donut fit tighter.

Well, this seems to be a very common failure point on these engines, mine is doing the same thing. I let it ride until the exhaust downpipe actually broke in half on a bumpy road, now its LOUD and STINKY!
I have been given/found two different part numbers for the Felpro exhaust rings, 23588 and 23626. Can anyone verify which of these is the real deal?
Also, Does anyone know what is the size of the studs that go from manifold to downpipe? (Yup, I broke one off with about 2 feet of extensions on the end of the ratchet! Painful and annoying.)
Do any parts stores carry the appropriate split nuts to fasten the downpipe to the manifold?? I understand you are supposed to use new ones each time because of the way they grip the stud... Im hoping to get these locally, as my TOYO dealer is about 3 hours away...
Trying to get some part numbers and options posted up here because one of the old threads Ive been reading mention part numbers for the studs or nuts... And there seems to be quite a few ppl with this project on the list.
Cheers!

Exhaust leak
Hi Folks,
Newbie checking in with my first post! Glad to have found this forum and am excited to be playing with my new-to-me 88 extra cab 4x4.
Relevant to this thread:
I also had an exhaust leak at the manifold / y-pipe junction. Replaced the donuts but then noticed that the catalytic converter had been replaced with a straight pipe and the intermediate support was not connected. I'm going to work on that but this thread also let me know I am missing a bracket for the exhaust pipe at the front as well.
Looks a lot like the one I had on my FJ60.
Just so you know, these brackets are available and I ordered one today from my tried and true parts guy. Costing me $24.00 bucks.
Anywho, glad to be here and thanks for all of the wisdom!
