22RE engine stumbling....
Hi,
New to the site, so I figured I'd get the ball rolling with a question....
I've got a 22RE engine ('87 4Runner). It's a re-man engine installed shortly before I purchased the truck. It tends to stumble a little. That's the only way I can describe it. It's far more common when the engine is not under load like when I'm cruising along at 2500 RPMs or when I'm backing off the throttle. Under hard acceleration there's no issue, or at least it doesn't feel like there is one.
So far I've:
* replaced plugs, wires, cap, igniter, fuel filter
* changed the engine octane setting and started using premium
* had a compression test done (all 4 are well within factory spec)
It's more of a nuisance than a problem, but I'd love to get it corrected all the same.
Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Cory

I just posted a thread with the same type of problem...however, I had a similar problem before and it ended up being that my idle mixture settings were wrong... get the book and look at what your setting should be for your truck...should be a label under your hood with that information.

My problem sounds the same as yours, the only time I noticed it was at stops(lower rpms) When I hit the gas to move it would stumble and very little power, until I got going again, and it seemed to run fine. It was my idle adjustment. I didnt have a tach, so what I did, I turned the adjustment down at idle until the engine just ran like crap! Then, I made small minute adjustments, let the engine stabilize after each adjustment and using the throttle linkage to rev the engine to check my results...it worked.
And wait for engine warm up before you start making adjustments.
Your welcome, hope it fixes it.

Much appreciated! I"ll definitely be giving this a shot.
BTW, I don't have a tach either (just guessing based on engine sound and what that translates to on other vehicles) so your advice on approach is particularly useful.
Cheers,
Cory
