22re coolant loss

New to the 22re club. Picked up a 94 Pickup with a 22re about 4 months ago. Well to my luck shortly after the head gasket let go on cylinder number 1 causing it to run like crap! 130,000 miles on the truck. So a head gasket turned into a rebuild once I tore it down & seen the damage to the rod & main bearings. I'm at a loss for words right now. I've spent a lot of time & money making sure this rebuild was perfect as could be. With a baby on the way, I needed a reliable truck to get back & forth to work. Although it's not my only vehicle to drive. I just love these little trucks. I'm no mechanic, but I'm a welder by trade & have always worked on all my vehicles, so this is my first rebuild. The head was shaved .08 with new .020 Pistons. Factory Toyota head gasket & head bolts. All torqued to 60 ft lbs in 3 stage sequence. I'm losing coolant but every so slightly. It's cold here in Kentucky right now. On first start up in the morning I get so some white smoke from the tailpipe in the mornings & when leaving work but only until the engine is warmed up. Which seemed normal to me. But if coolant is leaking into the cylinders when ignition is off them this would explain this. But I just wanted to get some input from other people on here of what could be causing me to lose coolant. The coolant overflow goes from full to empty after about two tanks(500 miles or so). Other than that it seems to run fine besides the sluggish 22re on 31s.

Thanks.

Grant.

Did you have the head checked for cracks when you rebuilt it?

Did you change the intake manifold gaskets?

All the bolts to the intake manifold torqued?

I would check the plugs and see if one is white or different from the others, Could be a sign of a leak.

Thanks for your replies. The head was checked for being warped & cracks when it was shaved at the machine shop. It tested good. All new gaskets on the motor. I used a Fel-Pro gasket on the intake manifold & plenum. It seemed to be of good quality. It was torqued to I believe 20 ft lbs. But if it was leaking at the intake manifold wouldn't I be getting smoke out of the tailpipe? Maybe it's leaking into the cylinders overnight & that's why I get smoke on startup? I will pull the plugs tonight & check them out.
