22RE blown head gasket cure?

Watch running without a stat, engines tend to overheat without one. I think what it is that the water does not stay in the rad long enough to cool and then you have problems. Really keep an eye on your temp. If you do run without one for a while you can make a small restrictor plate. You may need to experiment with different size holes, if you have an issue with over heating. Just a thought...
It will also cause the ECU to stay in open loop longer(or permanently) and it will reduce fuel economy, increase wear, oil contamination, and possibly sludge formation.

A while back I was talking to a guy I worked with...his father-in-law used to race stock and modified at the local track. They had to run restrictor plates to keep them from over heating...I figured the same held true here as well. I could be mistaken, I my self have not run without one.

I found a forum entry on another site a while back that thoroughly explained why the coolant can't really "move too fast" through the radiator, but I'm having a heck of time finding it again. I thought I saved it, copied it, bookmarked it, etc.

tnx, I'm gonna give it a try, I've got a new engine, so with 180k on a 22re with a blown head gasket with white smoke and antifreeze in with the oil, Nothing I can really ruin that a new engine won't fix or that a rebuild (which I plan to do slowly on the replaced engine) won't fix. sorry to specify so much but I want ppl to be able to find this in the threads easily. Tomorrow will start the test and I'll report back tomorrow afternoon.

well for the cost I decided to just rebuild the head, like $150 worth of material. I sold the 4runner though so someone else is rebuilding the head, so sorry but IDK.
