22r new Weber 32/36 backfire (ruined air filter)

1987 toyota 22r,Ok oem except weber and all smog removed., so i swapped an aisin for a weber 32/36 from LCE. I THOUGHT i was close to tuning it. Idled ok, ran good. Well, if you get in and floor it it ran great. Just easing into the throttle or coasting, it would backfire some and you could feel like a "miss" while coasting. So i attempted to "tune" it better today, huge bust🤬. Now it backfires worse. Timing was set at 6BTDC, air mixture 1 1/2 out, idle(gas throttle) 2 1/2 past touching. Well, i changed to 12 BTDC, No noticeable change. Ended up with air mix at 1 1/2, idle screw at 1 3/4 in past touching, idle is not good(around 400 rpm in gear). If i run the idle screw in anymore then i get vacuum at the dizzy. I can
run the air mix screw into it 1(from bottomed out) and it idles the same, but now it backfires worse(blew/burned the filter paper)! Any ideas? Sounds like i need to get some jets, but which ones? Any place better than others to get jet kits?

Also, nee aftermarket dizzy. Now i wonder if that new dizzy broke already! When setting the timing, it does bounce about 10-15 above where i set it. As if i time it for 5 btdc, every few seconds it will bounce to 15-20 btdc then back to normal. I know thats not normal, just not sure what causes that. Ideas?

The only time mine ever popped, banged and backfired was when the timing chain hydraulic tensioner took a dump. Ran good one minute and would hardly run the next. The timing jumping around is a sign of a chain issue but I assume a bad disty could do it as well. I bought my jet kit from Redline Weber. I also talked to them on the phone regarding an issue I had with my 32/36 before they talked me into changing to a 38 when I had a warranty issue. Best thing I ever did. Very knowledgeable and helpful. 1-877-405-4345.....

Thank you! Chain has less than 15k miles, so i hope it is good. I will plug the oem dizzy back in after cleaning it. Bought the aftermarket
1 to have a spare. If it is bad, it only lasted 3 days🤪

LOL, with the quality of parts these days 3 days sounds normal.

OK, fixed it......i hope. Time will tell 😁. Combination of stuff. 1st, new aftermarket dizzy was bad. Disassembled and cleaned OEM dizzy and reinstalled, no more timing bounce. Had slight bleed in plug wires, you could hold them and touch ground and feel a tingle. New plugs, new wires. Then reset weber "best lean" for the 100th time. Now all is good. Those webers are a fickle B to set properly. Ended up with air mix
1 1/2 from bottomed out, idle screw at 1 3/4 in from touching, rpm at 650(automatic tranny). Runs good now from stop to 90. Has a very slight hickup if almost stopping, then roll a foot, then jam the gas. I can live with that, not a scenario that will happen often.

650 RPM is too low for idle speed, it should be 750 RPM for the '87 22R with auto trans.

You are correct, factory RPM is 750. It idles good at 650 so i left it there. Im gonna drive it for a while and see how it does. So far i think it will be just fine at 650. Put in reverse with AC on and it still did not idle rough. I left it there, well wel what happens. Thanks for the input tho!
