22R-E Build up under Valve Covers (PICS)
Does anyone else have this crusty carbonish build up on the exhaust side of there 22R-E?

What Causes that?

Usually thats from not frequent enough oil changes. The dirty oil breaks down over time and burns itself onto everything. You could try some seafoam in the oil before next oil change.

i wouldn't put seafoam in the crankcase. i can dislodge that gunk and you'll go from having a good running engine that has some nasty buildup inside to a clean engine that doesn't run because the stuff you knocked off clogged the oil pickup screen and burned out the bearings.
my '91 22RE truck has one of the cleanest engine bays i've seen, but when i pulled the valve cover it was downright scary looking. funny, since it runs great and doesn't use any oil. i'll just let it be until i decide to rebuild it some day.

I should have elaborated the seafoam in oil. Its not good to use in an old engine with a ton of miles on it. But I have used it before in the oil in engines that had around 100,000 on them with no problems.

I hand the same problem on the back two cylinders only, I noticed this while changing my head gasket. The only thing I got for an awnser was that the rear cylinders on these engines run hotter than the others and this causes the oil to leave a residue on valves and rockers. I am not shure if this is true, but I would also like to know.
