1994 toyota 4x4s
A lifted 94 ext cab 4x4 5 speed on 35 inch tires, 180,000 miles with the 22re. guy says it pops out of 5th gear because it still has stock axle ratio.
VS.
An all stock un abused 94 toyota ext cab 3.0 v6 5 speed 4x4, 4000 miles on rebuilt motor, 185,000 on the odometer.
which would be better??????

stock gear ratio for toyota pickups besides sr5 automatic v6's were 4.10's aka if hes been driving it with 35's long it will probably be needing a clutch at some point. unless the first one is sas i thin id rather have the second and do my own build right. just me though. 35's on stock gears sounds like it could be a guy who half assed his project truck so who knows what else he half assed on it.

Man, it shouldn't pop out of gear no matter what gear ratio. At WOT, maximum HP/torque, the transmission should be able to handle it, even if there's extra load.
Might be fun learning how to rebuild that transmission.

It's the tranny and not a thing to do with gears and tires...

Well, if you've got or can get a transmission, the 22RE one... Then I'd take the lift off....

flynn25, what do you want the truck for? And to do?
B/c here's the problem... They both have pretty much the best light truck IFS and 4WD chassis... For a compact truck, and pretty much any truck. But size doesn't have to matter... If it does, you need a Chevy Dodge or Ferd to pull with...
Both engines are good, but one is stellar. And it's 2 pistons from a V6's power, and 4 from a V8's... Meaning it doesn't have the power...
But it substitutes that power for longevity. And it gets 19-20MPG...

I'd keep looking for a stock 22re if I were you. The trans definitely should not be popping out of any gear no matter what size tires you are running. Personally, after a few less than enchanting and expensive experiences I stay away from the 3.0 on these old trucks. The 20R/22R/22RE is one of the engines Toyota built it's reputation for reliability on. The 3.0 is one of their worst designs IMO.

i just sold an 04 z71 ext cab with the 5.3 v8 lift 6 inches on 35's and was looking for something better on insurance and a little better on gas, my silverado waas getting 10mpg. these are my favorite body style toyotas.

ok, and I'm assuming you're new to Toyota's? Is that correct?
You definitely don't need the lifted truck... And if you're gonna get somebody else to mechanic on your truck the V6 will do just as good...

keep looking for a 22re toyota pick up with a 5 speed in good shape and throw some cheapo steel wheels and 31 bfgs or a similar tire on it. it will be a great daily driver capable of some mild off road and have an aggressive look. my 2 cents. dont bother with a truck with 35s rigged onto it not that it cant be done correctly but if its got stock gears and a bad tranny id be willing to say it wasnt....

i used to own a 03 tacoma with the 3.4l i sold it because it was a prerunner 2wd. and my mother owns an fj cruzer 4x4. so this will be my 2nd toyota.

i just really dont want to get the v6 and have to end up having to work on the thing all the time, i mean it seemed to run great when i test drove it but just sooooo many people rag on that motor and im kind of scared to get it lol. and then there are others that say its great and that they prefer it over the 22re

get a stock 22re 5 speed and you will not regret it. The 3.0 may seem to run okay right now but it might blow the head gaskets in 6 months. You never can tell with those. A 22re can blow head gaskets too but they are not prone to it.
I've owned 3 4runners with the 3VZE in my lifetime and I am my third 22re right now and I can say from experience that the 22re is just a better motor. They get way better gas mileage for a daily driver but you still have the capability of a very durable 4WD.
Just my two cents.

they might soon enough, I mean, there are good 3VZE motors out there I guess, I have yet to encounter one personally and I had a buddy who had a really nice 93 4Runner. He bought it with 94K miles and it was mint. Then some years later at 148K miles the head gaskets blew and he spun a rod bearing I think. With any decent 22RE that hasn't been totally neglected I think the odds are on your side. With a 3VZE the odds are stacked against you.
I gave up on the 3VZE, I don't like to take a gamble anymore when it comes to my cars, my time and my money.
