1994 22re engine surging problem
Okay I recently bought a 1994 22RE extended cab pick up I straight piped it with literally just from the flange where the catalytic converter was I bolted a 4-foot 6-inch pipe for my exhaust and recently when I'm at a stop in the truck is running and I've have the brake pushed in the engine starts surging but when I pull the fuse for the brake lights or unplug the brake lights the engine no longer surges? I had a 1990 3.blow extended cab four-wheel drive pickup that did the same exact thing with the surging and having to do with wiring of the brakes never could figure it out before I sold it. Hopefully someone knows what the hell's going on or has experienced the same thing

Hey man, I have a 1987 4runner 22re and it does the exact same thing. I have not pulled the fuse to see if that makes it stop. My engine has just been freshly built and all of the vacuum lines have been replaced with new silicone hoses. My rig runs fine except for when I’m at a stoplight and hit the brakes, then it surges from 1220rpm to 600rpm. I have a new ENGNbldr Street RV head and 270/430 cam, trail gear header and new 2.5” exhaust . The rig did this before the rebuild, and I hoped it would resolve afterwards, but it did not. I’ll try pulling the fuse and see if that helps, if it does I’ll run down the electrical gremlin and let u know what I find

I had a very similar issue after cleaning my throttle body. I have a 94 pickup and what happens is this: when the idle is above a certain value, like 1200rpm or something, and you hit the brakes, fuel is cut off. If your idle is set too high, when you hit the brakes when at a stop light let’s say, then the fuel is cut off so the idle lowers. Then fuel kicks back on raising the idle, then it gets cut off again and you’re in a cycle. I lowered my idle to around 850rpm and it fixed the issue.
hope that helps

Another thing, with your straight pipe addition, you have leaned out your mixture which will raise the idle. You can lower the idle but I would also make sure you’re not running too lean. Pull plugs and look at color, I’d recommend.
In a carbureted vehicle you’d need to rejet, but fuel injection can compensate, albeit up to a point. You can still potentially be running lean enough to cause damage.

I will lower my idle and see if that helps. I appreciate your input. I have unhooked the vacuum line my booster and plugged the vacuum line but that didn’t resolve the issue.

I was just having the same problem. The idle screw was worn out and I wrapped some Teflon tape on it. It didn't help that much. I got one of these on impulse and I've had it a couple of weeks and the problem is fixed! With shipping it was $17. I have struggled for a couple of years with the issue. https://www.lceperformance.com/22RE-...-p/1061049.htm

I replaced the fast idle screw with one from LCE, and set the idle to 800rpm, no change. I pulled the brake fuse... the surge stopped. Now I have to figure out that part.
