1993 head gasket replacement

Thanks Scope. We have it running now. It started right up. Having a problem with the engine overheating after idling about 20 minutes. Tried to burp the system with heater on and radiator cap off. No heat from vents. Upper radiator hose is hot and lower hose is cold. After running for a while with the cap off the fluid starts to boil at the top to the radiator with some fumes (hopefully just boiling fluid).
Do you think there is a problem with the water pump? We installed a new one while doing the timing belt. Also installed a new thermostat.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Why are you idling for 20 minutes? That is a long time. I guess an auto should handle that but I'd never try that with my 94 truck if I did not have to. I recall reading there is a shut off to these engines at 20 minutes of idling. Literally the engine shuts down if it idles for 20 minutes to avoid damage. I forget the restart procedure. The owners manual does warn against long idling fyi...

We had its inaugural drive last Saturday. It starts idles and runs well but takes a lot of power to move forward when in drive. Initially thought it could be a stuck brake caliper but it rolls well when in neutral and seems to move as expected in reverse. The transmission level was low but I added fluid this evening and it didn't help. We bought the truck with a blown headgasket the owner claimed that everything else worked well; hopefully it's not a bad transmission. Thought perhaps the timing was off, but it idles very well. Any other ideas?
Appreciate the help.

Did some more testing this evening. It moves forward fine when manually in first gear and in reverse. Could that indicate that the automatic transmission is not shifting to the correct gear? Perhaps it's in too high a gear? Not sensing speed correctly?

So looking at the transmission solenoid valve backup chart if the truck feels like its in 3rd in "D" and 1st in "L" it would appear that the No. 1 solenoid is malfunctioning. Is there anything else I should check before changing out the solenoid? I unplugged the TPS and there was no change in idle or the transmission issue.
