1992 Toyota Pickup 3VZE No Check engine light in On position

I inherited an old Toyota pickup and am running into a couple issues.

When I first started working on it about 2 weeks ago, I could jump TE1 and E1 and get codes. Now I'm noticing that when I put the vehicle in the on position, the check engine light isn't on. Then, when I go to start the vehicle, the vehicle check engine light does come on and the vehicle starts. my original issue of it wanting to die when I push the throttle quickly down is still there but now I'm not seeing a check engine light or able to get any diagnostic codes out of it.

To give you some history, I have an issue where in closed loop, the vehicle revs up and and runs just fine but the moment it goes into open loop, i can only slightly push the throttle to rev up and pushing the throttle quickly causes the engine to want to stall out.

any help you can give would be amazing... I feel like at this point I'm literally just throwing parts at it hoping it works...

Sensors replaced or tested:
  • O2 sensor (that was the original code when jumping te1 e1)
  • AFM - the forums says this is where to start (I have googled so much). I ordered a chinese one and the FSM seems to indicate it is in spec when testing with a meter. I did just buy a used OEM one off ebay. what's another 130 bucks for an amazing looking truck.
  • ECT - Checked with a meter and in spec.
  • TPS - I can put a meter on it and see the voltage increasing as I advance the throttle.
  • Timing - I put a timing light on it and it was advanced nearly off the indicator. I backed it down to 10 degrees.
  • Spark plug wires - they look new, I believe the previous owner replaced those to figure out the issue.
  • spark plugs - a little black from running too rich but they cleaned up.
  • Fuel pump - replaced just because but testing the fuel pressure it is in spec.
  • fuel filter - replaced just because.
  • fuel regulator - pressure test indicates it is within spec.

i have a 22re and i don't know jack about the v6, but that timing light situation sounds rather strange, like the idle speed was wrong or something??

checked for vacuum leaks? the hose on our engines cracks at the folds and it's difficult to see.

you won’t believe it but I bit the bullet and replaced the ECU and it fixed it!!!!

I always hear that the ECU is pretty bullet proof but the way the CEL would sometimes work and sometimes not, I decided… let’s do it. If anything I have a spare and parts are harder to find so who cares. She drives like a dream. I’m so dang happy.

Thanks for your suggestions!

This is more to help the next guy out and close out the thread. I always hate searching a forum and I don't have closure. When I opened the ECU up, I found a capacitor C102 that was leaking. That was the reason my CEL would work sometimes and not others and the issue with my inability to rev the engine. My guess is this circuit has something to do with the Air Fluel mix. It is four screws and easy to visually inspect. Wish I would have looked just to see before randomly throwing parts at the issue.
