Keep it stock and well maintained.
One of the guys I liked the most on this site, because of his helpfullness, moding skills, knowledge, and lots of skilled friends... is driving an old VW today (last time I checked). And that was a 3.4, an even more robust engine than the 3.0.
If you must mod your vehicle for performance, do it not on your DD.
imho.

I dont know if this is true, but there were 2 types of toyotas made: a j-series (built in Japan) an the 1-series (here in the states). For some reason the J-series are better built, maybe you got stuck with 1-series. Mine is a J-series, 150k miles and done the HG twice, once was at the dealer (it didnt need it) but we didnt know that. the the last one at 150k, Ill agree that to "hop-up" the engine is pricey, not sure how much i spent, got all the receipts, ill add them up one of these days, althought i rather not know. But It feels great, It gets and goes EASILY an I plan on riding it for another 200K plus. An it is my DD 3.0.

Hmm my last 3.0L had 256k on it with one head job. I sucked water in the intake, and beat the piss out of it. Redlined it, lots of fast acceleration. Rolled the truck and still drove it after it sat on its side for over a day. I really only did regular maintnence. Got 16mpg, did 110 with it on flat ground on 31's, had enough power to push it wherver I pointed. The only thing that slowed it down was traction. Sounds like you guys's rigs were lemons or abused as a child.
you are only running 31's no wonder you thought it had plenty of power and what else have you driven because this motor definitely does not have a ton of power. and 12mpg here... yeah i'm pretty over this useless motor. its okay if you have a stock truck with stock 4:56 or 4:88's and stock 31's .. put anything else on and you are driving a slug..

And ive driven a chipped f-250 powerstroke diesel, chipped 07 GMC duramax, SC t100, triton v-10 f-350, etc etc etc and i still say for the truck size it had the needed power. It doesnt have alot of excess power but it got the job done hauling scrap metal (lots of it) etc.
It was WAY faster than my friends 22-re on 33's for sure.
