1992 4runner shifts randomly help
Ok i have a 1992 4runner v6 automatic its all stock it has 130k on it. Sometimes when im driving it will shift up and down randomly and sometimes wont go into a high enough gear. It usally only does this for a few minutes then its fine again. I dont really no to much about toyota's ive read a little bit and could it possibly be a shift silonoid. Its also not throwing a CEL.

Not sue on the Toyotas if the fill tube goes right into the pan or not, but if it does, the job can be a bit of a pain in the butt.
Just drain and remove the pan and the three shift solenoids are right there.
Just unbolt the one bolt that holds each one in and replace...
Very straight forward..
(Only ever done this on a Jeep AW4.. Same trans as the a340 series in the Toyotas)

This is a solid trans by Aisin, if well maintained. Check your fluid, make sure it's full, pink and clear. You can search on here for the FSM which walks you through some diagnostics. It may be as simple as a clogged filter allowing inadequate flow through the pump.
Has it been regularly maintained? Flushed?
The fact that there is no CEL is odd...did you read the trans codes? THere is a different procedure and the OD light flashes instead of the CEL.
Also, note that it shift differently until the engine is thoroughly warmed up. If you have issues with the temperature sending unit or other engine functions it may reflect in poor performance in the trans. Check these things out and report back for more advice.

do you wheel it at all? if so (my dodge did this) the trans will go into hunting mode, its not getting a signal from the computer to the trans telling it to shift, check your grounds and wires for cuts or nicks, something that causes a short, not sure if toyotas like dodge where the computer tells the trans to shift, worth a shot though

ok thank you i dont think it has to do with temp at all. Today on my way home it didnt do it at all and it was a bit chilly out. Im going to try and put some synthetic atf in it. I have no clue about the service its had ive had it for about 2 months know its just now starting to do this. The tranny fluid does look a bit dirty.
