1991 3.0 Head gasket Repair advice

So Toyota wanted something like $350 for their 'head gasket kit'.. Is this the way to go? And as far as the water pump, same thing, Toyota or is there another brand that will hold up alright? Im thinking belt and pump are really the only one's we are going to do. I agree though, the injector service would be a good idea. The amount of gunk on the face of their nozzles were pretty bad.
As far as normal grime, just a few questions.
-My TB had a significant amount of oilish/gunk on its butterfly, that normal?
-The intake manifold's 6 inlets (where it meets the upper manifold that we have alreadly pulled) had some significant amount of grime in them too. Typical for almost 160k?
92 Toy thank you again for the pictures of your sons engine work, REALLY helped! And Im pretty impressed that you opted to pull the engine because it was dirty and needed a good cleaning... I am no where near that level. Yea, its dirty, but I think I'll give it a good pressure washing once its all sealed back up. Besides, my brother is chompin' at the bit to drive this thing.
On a side note, its really been a fun experience so far working with my little brother. To see him get motivated and jump in on the project has made this much more enjoyable. I currently drive a 2007 Tundra with a small lift and some 33" Toyo M/T.. and my brother said that once this thing is done, he wants it bigger than my truck.
I told him to keep dreaming..

I have not priced anything yet....but Toyota of Dallas (AKA www.trdparts4u.com ) was where I ordered my Toyota-specific stuff from. They had the best prices by far...even with shipping from Texas to Pennsylvania.
as far as your technical questions.....about the TB and the manifold grime....not sure.....maybe a PCV issue if I am remembering my crap right.
make sure you replace that PCV also.
having the luxury of time is priceless.......rushing through a job only begs to do it a 2nd time. So, good thing you can kinda take your time.
there are other places for injector servicing......probably all the same anyways......but when I was searching around, Witch Hunter kept coming up.....they are who I would recommend.

yes...that should work.....since you have the bolt off i would spray more PB Blaster there and rap it a few times lightly with a rubber mallet and then use a pulley puller

Ok. This is my first attempt at pulling a pulley with a pulley puller. Yeah.
We've got the main pulley nut off, do we need to remove the 4 bolts too or will the whole thing just pull off? There isnt anything else holding it on, right?
On another note, I broke something
See that little green thing? I broke off its upper nipple.. What the hell did I break? Its located on the rear side of the engine, kinda behind the passenger fuel rail.

I've broken that before. It's a Vacuum Switching Valve (vsv) that helps control idle, if memory serves me right. I don't recall it being that expensive either.

With some gentle taps of a rubber mallet, the crank pulley came off without issue. We disconnected the exhaust from below, got the valve covers off and am yet again, caught at a snag.
Those frickin' cam sprocket/gear bolts are on there so tight! Sheesh! AND to top that off.. How the heck are you supposed to get the damn exhaust crossover pipe off?! AH! I think I may call some local shops and see if they have a SST tool that I can use on the sprockets. Ive already broken 1 craftsman socket wrench and extender! Putting that lifetime warranty to use!
BTW- I got a 'www.yotatech.com is a reported attack site!' warning.. Anyone else?!

yes...there is a thread going on about that attack site thing.
don't know what to tell ya about the cross-over pipe while the mootor is in the truck. not hard to do when it's out. and screw that pipe too. i told my son, his motor will go back in with headers on it......$600 to $800 headers but, who can argue with dad when I proclaim that.
of course, actually buying them is another story.

Holy crap. I tried a superman downward press and couldnt get it. I felt like I was going to herniate something, either that or I was going to grunt so hard I'd lose control of my bowels. No thanks. Im going to have to hold off until I can get a helping hand.
Ive managed to get the drivers side exhaust crossover nuts off. The passenger side is proving to be quite a bit harder to just get at the nuts. Is there any chance that I could pull the passenger head with the manifold AND the crossover still attached? Or should I attempt to get at the manifold nuts? Tips? Tricks? Help?

i just gave up trying to take that exact bolt off too.
easy time getting the crankshaft bolt off, but these....these are pure evil.
let me know if wedging against that water inlet does the trick....may have to put our's back on.

What was I thinking?! Work smarter, not harder!
I set it up so the sprocket holder was in the passenger sprocket, and the handle rested under the drivers sprocket. Worked like a gem!
As for the drivers side, I removed the water pump/thermostat, crank pulley and lower timing belt cover, and rested the handle against the crank shaft!! Worked! Popped both nuts! Gotta admit, its scary how hard you gonna yarf!!
