ok, now that you got it pointing at #1 fire it up, if it does anything funny, spin the crank back to TDC and if it's pointing at #1 again point it at #4 instead. If it's pointing at #4 after putting at tdc the second time take it out and point it @ #1. And try again.

Yeah, so next time read the instructions before putting the distributor in the hole. Line it up with the marks on the gear and shaft housing, then carefully put it in without moving it using the mark on the top(not the bottom where the other two marks are)to line it up with the ignition timing mark on the head. That puts it facing #1.

Well, you never know.
And don't feel too bad, alot of guys can't get it right even with the instructions.
It never seemed that confusing to me. I'm one of the rare ones who's never managed to put the thing in the wrong way. I've done it atleast half a dozen times now myself without issues.

Excellent!! Plus, now that I think about it, I put oil on the pistons, and spilled a little while filling it up :/
Onto other things.. I am not going to leave it running right now. By myself, I could not swing and tighten the alternator so the belt is squeaking like a mofo! I'll set that aside for another day. Im just so excited that its running!!!
Finally, I just wanted to say thanks to all of you. Without your help, pointers and motivation, I have no doubt that this project wouldnt have been completed. Simply put, I could not have done it without all of you. Thank you so so so so much! If you were all here, I'd be taking you all out for a beer or three..

Hahaha! No problem. My little brother's friend has one. Do you just hook it up to the number 1 plug cable, shine it at the crank and spin the distributor? I think thats what I read about a different car.. Hmm, I should probably search, huh?

yup, that would be right. but when you put the light on the #1 plug wire, put it as close to the plug as possible not by the dizzy. 22re's don't have that problem, but since the 3vze the #1 plug is clear across the engine bay. also don't forget the battery connections for the timing light as well. otherwise it wont light up lol.
Good thing I asked you to take that dizzy cap off and not assume you had it on there properly huh?

Thanks! Im still psyched that its actually running! We've got a few more things to do before I'll allow him to take it out on the road.
-Flush the coolant. After scraping all the FIPG that was throughout the engine, Im sure some fell into the passages.
-Oil change. After having to do 4 helicoils, Im paranoid that some metal flakes got in by the cams and I wanna do an oil change to make sure its cleaned out before we rev it up.
-Tighten the alternator belt. After getting back in there and putting the engine at TDC, I had to try and muscle the alternator out while tightening it, and it was a fail. I started the 4Runner and it was squeeeeeaaaaallling like a mofo! Kinda loud inside of a garage!
-Get the timing light and fine tune it.
I think thats it! It is going to need brakes sooner than later too, but Im just stoaked to get it back out on the road!! Your turn 92 TOY!
