Might have helped a bit more to also get the sound from near the engine with the hood open so we might be able to nail it down better. Inside the cab it can be harder to tell. Offhand guesses: the valves need adjusting, you have a slack timing chain, non-functional timing chain tensioner, broken timing chain guide, exhaust leak, failing fan clutch/dampener, bent pulley, bad bearing in idler pulley, bad alternator bearing, more. Could be low oil level too, check your dipstick, Jimmy!

just cranked it up cold. its a bit louder cold. and it pretty much does it at 1900 - 2200 rpms. while driving and pulling a trailer, I still just hear it at those rpms

when I let it go to idle I could still hear a tapping, that resembles a valve?

the Oil level is good. its been doing this for a long time. I am just getting sick of it

Id look up toyota valve tick or 22r valve tick on youtube. Compare sounds.
the 4 bangers like to remind us theyre there with little valve ticks. Pop your valve cover and measure valve clearance.
quick fix is doing a little seafoam treatment. This will give you a quieter motor while you diagnose. its not neccesarily a longterm fix

Now the cover is off. I have adjusted the valves. They seemed to be fine for the most part. And this chain is loose. Most likely the noise i hear.

im guess the chain tensioner is faulty.

Shine a flashlight down the timing chain. If the tensioners are worn or chipped they need to be replaced.
drop your oil pan. Look for chunks.
you could do the chain job in a day or two if you get all your parts in hand

Im really only seeing a guide on the passenger side with the tensioner.

I don't see a guide on the driver side. and it looks like the chain is hitting the "timing cover?"

the tensioner really doesn't look worn, it looks pretty smooth

The guide on the drivers side has broken into pieces and fallen into the oil pan it sounds like, that's usually the one that breaks first. The chain can eventually put a hole in the timing cover if not taken care of early on.

Most people do the head gasket at the same time, as it's not a tonne of extra work, and I've heard it's very hard to seal the spot at the top of the timing cover where it meets the bottom of the head.

Good luck!

Yea look at pics of chain kits. Driver side tensioner is the long one.
your sounds are not a valve tick, as youve probably already figured out.
dont be intimidated by the job. Its an advanced backyard mech job at the most. Buy quality parts and a good torque wrench.

It looks like for 100 dollars, I can get a good kit with the metal guides. Im not looking forward to it, because I really have no place to work on vehicles. but it looks like its just gonna have to happen right in the driveway.

It has been doing this for over a year, I just constantly shift in order to keep that sound gone. probably why it hasn't worn through yet, I pull a trailer up into the mountains with this truck lol

Which kit is it? Be careful where you buy. Some chains dont fit as advertised. I got a oem kit from lce. I think yotamasters and some other yota specific companies will have comparable kits.
i did my head n timing job on the curb in front of a house i was renting so i hear ya. But youll meet a lot of neighbors. Keep your block wrapped up with a big kitchen trash bag whileyoure not working on it. I jacked the front of my truck up to drop the oilpan and left it on jacks to bring it closer to working height. Pull your radiator and grill for cleaner access. Take lots of pics so you dont try to remember everything.
Trace a cardboard layout of your t cover and water pump and put the bolts in their corresponding location so your not playing a guessing game when it comes time to put it back together.
theres lots of writeups due to the popularity of this engine. Theres 2 or 3 bolts on t cover that need thread sealer. Dont forget them. And be careful putting those small bolts back on. Very easy to overtorque them. For the price of a new t cover, i wished id replaced mine. If yours is nicked it might be something to consider.
id say its actually a fun project although i know its intimidating. I have a much deeper appreciation for this series of engines now.

Timing chain stretch is going to happen. From my understanding a man transmission puts a lot of stress on the chain, especially pulling loads uphill where you might be downshifting and running the revs up 500-1000 all of a sudden. An autotrans takes a lot of abuse instead of the engine.
but im a 22r n 5 speed (currently 20r and 4 speed) guy so...isnt the reason we love these trucks because of how hard we can push them?
cant wait til spring or summer when i can get another one.
