I tried that once and broke 3 sockets and one breaker bar, but it worked.

alternatively, one could place a small block of wood in a cylinder, then bolt a thick steel bar over the top of the cylinder using the head bolt holes, then try to break the bolt loose from the crank. (I've done that on other engines with success.)
