1988 Pickup 2WD Carb A/C System issue
Hello everyone. My pickup is having some an A/C issue. It has been switched from R12 to R134a. I hooked up the manifold gauges and vacuumed down the system. It held vacuum for over 30 minutes. So, I took out a can of refrigerant and tried to charge the system with it. A little refrigerant went into the system, then no more refrigerant would go into the system. So I let a little bit of refrigerant into the high side, and the compressor kicked on. The pressure on the low side got to about 120psi, and the pressure on the high side got to about 150psi. Once at these pressures, the gauges remained at these pressures and didn't change. It still wouldn't take any refrigerant.
So, the system wouldn't take a charge and the clutch kicked on after I let some refrigerant into the high side, but still won't take a charge. Does anyone have any ideas?

However, in the above case, there was no solution ever posted.

Update: I replaced the AC Compressor with a Denso rebuilt (10P13C), as was originally installed. This did not solve the issue. On further inspection, I found that the r134a conversion fittings were not allowing the manifold gauges to properly fit on the compressor and fully depress the Schrader valve. After realizing this I was able to use r12 gauges to charge the system with the original fittings and it is now working well.
