1988 4runner idle issues
So I am looking to buy my first car (1988 4runner) off my auto shop teacher for 3500.0 but there seems to be an issue with the 4th piston that causes the car to have a rough idle. He (my auto shop teacher) thinks it's the fuel injector. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions as to how to fix the issue. Also it's the stock engine.

Try using this >> https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...t-22re-270857/ to see if it is firing or swapping it with another injector and see if the problem moves or stays. Could be a clogged injector, bad injector, or a poor connection in the wiring or connector itself.

So my teacher is saying that we are going to have to remove the intake manifold to get to the fuel injector... Is their a way around it or is it just easier to go ahead and take it off?

It's not that much work to get to the injectors, but you don't have to completely REMOVE the air intake chamber (intake manifold does NOT need to be removed).
But, first do a compression test and if needed a leak down test as suggested above.
$3500 is steep for a car with an engine problem, before you buy it make sure it isn't going to cost you to much to fix it.

I have done a compression test already (lemme go and find the numbers) as for $3500 the car is in amazing condition. No rust what so ever, no issues besides this one injector problem and the more work I put into fixing it the more the price will decrease.

You can do the led noid light trick without using the injector clip. Just take a test light and jab one of the white grounds running to the injectors. There are 4 then couple down to two wires inside the loom. Take the other side of the the led and alligator Clip a wire from your positive cable to the other lead on the LED. 4runner injectors always have power and fire when the circuit is completed via grounding through the ecu.

Do you mean we do have to remove the intake chamber, but not the intake Manifold?

I hope you're making good progress on your truck. If not much trouble, would you mind posting pics of how you removed and replaced the injectors? I could not find those on the forum.

Rad4Runner, to replace the injectors just take off all of the bolts holding the air intake chamber (plenum) onto the intake manifold. You don't need to remove any of the air/vac hoses on the passenger side, just the hoses and links on the driver side of the plenum, then lift like I had done in this picture. You have access to all of the injectors. Only catch is, there is one bolt that holds the fuel hose down and it's a little hard to get to in this position. It's on the passenger side, but with a small ratchet wrench (I think 12mm socket) you should be able to work it out).
At this point remove all of the fuel hoses and 4 bolts on the fuel rails, and carefully lift. Th injectors are just sitting in there place.
You should change the crush washers too, and new plenum gasket. At the end when you bolt the fuel lines and fuel rails together, look in the fsm injector section to know how to turn the fuel pump on to pressurize the system and make sure there are no leaks before you put the lenum back on.

Doesn't look to bad, then. I got 22R-E so should be simpler, right? I'll take a closer look at the engine today.

Yeah I know :/
But just a little update, we did it! We got the fuel injectors in but it still ran a bit rough. So when we were putting it back together some idiot cross threaded the cold start injector bolt (I think that's what it was called) and when we cranked the engine over it started spewing fuel. 180 dollar mistake. Then we decided to get some new spark plugs in and check the distributor cap. (And some dip˟˟˟˟ almost stripped 1 of the screws that holds the distributor cap in) after putting that all in and all the work associated with it. But regardless we fixed the issue and she runs good now
