1987 Toy pickup xtra cab 2wd turbo power steering gear.
Hello my power steering gear is leaking and I don’t know if it’s a 1/2 ton or 1 ton ?. I would like to order the steering gear before I take it to the shop. 1987 xtra cab 22ret turbo sr5 5spd 2wheel drive. Thank you in advance.

I bought three rebuilt power steering gears (PSG) each a different make from the local auto parts store to replace my 30 year old worn out and leaking PSG. All three PSG bolted in place, but but not a one would accept the steering shaft rag joint onto the PSG input shaft. They all have the same number of splines (think it was 31), but the PSG input shaft was slightly too big in diameter. On the last one the store manager personally delivered it and I showed how it doesn't fit, but the OEM slips on easily with just 2 fingers. He was baffled.
So, I went on online to a salvage search and bought a used OEM Toyota one (had 'Toyota' name cast into the housing). It slipped on perfectly. They do offer like a 30 day warranty and it was $98 shipped from WA State to Virginia. The worthless rebuilt ones were $180 to $250 each. It's 6 years later and still working with no leaks.
Moral, a used Toyota is better than a new POS aftermarket. I'd highly recommend that route as it was the only way for me.

Steering gear
Thank you very much JoeS sorry you had to go through that what a pain. I’m sure glad you responded I think I should just pull the box and have it rebuilt. Just had shoulder surgery in November so we’ll see what happens. Thanks.
