Angry 1987 4runner Rear window won't go up.

Hey guys, I've recently purchased a 1st generation 4runner and fixed some minor problems with it, but the only one I'm stuck on is the rear window going up from the tailgate while using the key. It rolls up & down from the inside switch, and even goes down using the key in the tailgate, but it will not go up with the key, and before I search for a place to buy a whole new part, I would like to try and fix it. How can I fix this? has anybody had the same problem before? Thanks

Bad switch

Broken wire

poor connection

A problem in the rear window relay !!

The up circuit from the rear switch goes to pin 12 on the window relay.

looks like you need to pull the hatch apart and do some trouble shooting

Concur.

See this... or better yet, so you would not have this issue anymore... THIS!

IF you prefer to access and test/inspect the relay first,
Get access to it and ground Pin 12 (with a paper clip touching back pin through back of plastic connector. If window rolls up, then relay is good.
Then in continuity check/resistance mode, probe back of same pin. Have someone turn tailgate key to UP. That pin should get continuity to ground. Path is through blue-black wire, to pin 3 of tailgate switch.
If no ground there, inspect your wiring and where wire connects to switch. My guess is broken wire (Blue-Black) in flex between body and tailgate.

could well be a broken wire. i had a similar problem with the tailgate switch, except it was for lowering the window. up worked fine. upon inspection/testing with VOM, found the wire for "down" was broken in several places (in the tailgate). replaced the broken section, and it has worked flawlessly for months.
