1986 Toyota Pickup - Stereo Wiring

The 86 pickup I purchased earlier this year had all the speakers and stereo removed when i got it. I am now wanting to install one and it appears the connectors that are supposed to be in there for connecting a stereo might be missing. I have one 24 pin connector and a 6 pin connector open where the stereo mounting area is located - Can anyone let me know what these connectors are for, and if there is something I am missing. Appreciate the help

Here's what I found when researching although I have not worked on it yet to verify. Viewed from mating end of connectors.

Thank you for the reply. I came across the same info when I was searching on line - while one of the connectors on the 83-86 pin out info looks similar the wires are different colors. Additionally the other connector is 9 pin and the other connector I have open is 24 pin.

I believe the 6-pin connector(though it only has 5 wires) is for the up/down switch that mounted above the radio for a power antenna. The wiring color and pin orientation is consistent with my 1987 EWD manual. I think only the 4wd vehicles had the switch, so you could lower the antenna to avoid damaging it, while still having the radio on. I suspect the 24-pin was used if the vehicle had a automatic transmission.

If the wiring for the radio and speakers was cut you can order a repair kit to restore the factory connection. Most better stereo brands offer a wiring adapter that plugs into the factory harness, then plugs to the radio. Much cleaner than using butt connectors or wire nuts. I got one off Amazon $7-$8 if iirc.

24 Pin Connector

Hey there,

did you ever find out what the white 24 pin connector is for???

I have one on my Toyota as well and just can’t seem to figure out if something is missing or if it is unused.

I think that 24 pin connector would be used if the vehicle was an ATM. It would have plugged into the ECT ECU. An ECU is one of the few things i can imagine getting that many wires in one connector, and the ECT ECU did mount in that area. I think under the center console just forward of the shifter
My guess is if you look at it closely it probably looks like it was never plugged in. Old grease and a bunch of dust.
