1986 4Runner w/ OM617 Diesel Swap
I spend most of my time on ih8mud, but I figured you guys would like this truck.
I had been searching a long time for a good donor truck for an OM617 Mercedes turbo diesel swap. I had mostly been looking at pre-1995 Pickups with the gear-driven RF1A transfer case.
While cruising Facebook Marketplace I stumbled on a semi-local 1986 Toyota 4Runner that had already been swapped with a 1985 OM617. It was in decent shape, and the price was killer. This morning I drove to San Antonio and bought it.
The first order of business is to baseline the truck and fix a few issues. It needs a new battery, some wiring, and a horn. The steering wheel is also clocked 30° off center. It has a small oil leak at the back of the motor.
And I want to upgrade from the old 4x4Labs adapter to the Doomsday setup with heavyweight flywheel. I’ll install my R151F and dual case at the same time.
Right now I'm shaking it down and fixing the most urgent issues. It would be killer to find a rust-free '84 or '85 with a blown motor that I could swap this setup into.
Let me know what you guys think!

If i am not mistaken. Your injection pump is missing the vacuum line for boost reference. Should be a line from the intake manifold to the square thing ontop of the injection pump.

After the ALDA delete, it is a completely different truck. Before, the truck was totally anemic below boost. It was difficult/dangerous to drive, because there was no torque off idle. Now, it's a dream. It would be my first mod for any OM617-powered vehicle.

That's cool! I'm currently swapping mine as well. I actually went looking for a vehicle to swap this engine into lol.
I'm curious why swap adapters though? I mean, if it aint broke..

I want to swap adapters because I purchased the Doomsday heavyweight flywheel and I have an R151F trans and dual case to install. I need the Doomsday adapter to install the new setup.

That makes sense, he sells nice stuff, and the heavy flywheel is a nice addition.

Alright, time for a holiday update!
Block came back from the machine shop, no issues there, I ordered a lower end gasket kit and the rod bearings I didn't have yet to jam it all together. Mercedes puts pictures on the rings to show where they go, fancy.
Top end is just sitting there, still need to go through the head, rebuild injectors, the timing chain is like 200 bucks... Ick... So it'll still be awhile lol.
