Water Entering Through Rusty Fenderwells

Water Entering Through Rusty Fenderwells
Well when I bought my '85 4Runner a few weeks ago I could see that the rear fenderwells had a little rust but I didn't know to what extent. Come to find out that the little bit that is rusted is enough to leak water into the rear storage compartments of the 4Runner. How can I fix this? I know I'm going to have to cut into the fenderwell to get the existing rust off but what can I put either on the inside or outside to prevent water from getting into the interior?? Thanks for any input.

It sounds a little weird, but you can try filling the gaps with that 'Great Stuff' expanding foam in a can. Thats what we did on my truck before it got new quarter panels. Just spray it on (NOT too much!) and you can even sand or carve it once its hardened.

I've used this stuff before as insulation in some places on a log cabin but never on a truck. Its not a bad idea though for a quick fix until I figure something else out. I might do some fender trimming in the future so I'm not too keen on buying new fenders just to cut them up later on. Thanks for the ideas guys.
