Tailgate Release Cables
Mine are shot... They are all rusted out and now I have to manually release the latches. Anyone have a spare set laying around for sale?
If not, anyone have a solution? It looks like you could use bicycle brake cables, but I don't know how you would attached the nob things on the ends of the cable.
Thoughts?

Cables? Are you driving a Runner? Oh... saw your username...
Crappy thing is the pickup trucks use rods... so no parts swapping there. Last I checked, the dealership still sells them and there were 9 left in the U.S. (Toyota-Japan discontinued making them).
I think taking your old ones into a bicycle repair shop would be a worthy choice. I'm pretty sure bike builders cut cable to fit, so they'd have to know how to pinch the dowel back on.

went to two local bike shops with no luck... I might have to call the stealer and see if they have any in stock.
Anyone have ideas on where i can find the part #? I looked at toyodiy.com and couldn't find it listed.

I'll give it a shot, but I don't know how much they will help. The local home improvement stores (Atlanta) are pretty worthless when it comes to customer service.

Do you happen to know the part number?
Are the cables working? ie Do the cables move freely inside the black tubing? If they are working I might just have to take them off your hands if the price is right.

For future reference on search queries, I've squeezed several extra years out of the cables on both my Runners after they froze up/stretched out. Pb Blaster chased with lithium to free/lube, then twisted them until they started to coil up to take up the stretched out slack. Replaced and still work fine, most of the time...

I went to the Dealer and he gave me this part number: 64607-89101. Both sides have the same part number and they list for $39 each. He said that the computer shows 27 in the country.

$28.50 on Toyotapartszone as well. Like I said above it's a really easy fix that never fails, the one time I had issues afterward it actually turned out to be slop in the handle. But if you've got $60 burning a hole in your pocket, by all means.

I wish I had just fixed the old set, but after a moment of stupidity they became totally un-fixable... Anyway, got the new cables, the new ones will probably last a lot longer.

Moisture
Moisture and lack of usage becomes the problem. I have the same problem, but paying $36.17 plus tax at the dealer seems to me to be a waste of money. Those other online parts are cheaper, but they are charging anywhere between 5 and 13 for shipping.
I am working on a cheaper fix made from bicycle cable.

For future reference, second gen cables work perfect. We have tons of 2nd gens in the pull a parts here. I grabbed a set of the cables and am using them in my 85.
