Replaced trans/transfer, now driveshaft too long!
Hi guys,
I have a 91 ext. cab that was originally a 22re but I swapped in a 92 JDM diesel (2l-te converted to 2l-tII burning veggie oil with a 2-tank system) but is otherwise stock as far as I know.
Anyway, my transmission died on me recently and I replaced it with a trans/transfer that was apparently out of a 91 today. I think it's a W56 or at least my bellhousing bolts too it although it had a one piece top plate for both the transfer and transmission shifters which I've never seen before (foward shift case though). I'm not sure what the tranny I pulled was but it had a breather hose from the transfer block off plate to the transfer shifter top plate meaning it may have been a G series? The problem is that when I bolted my rear driveshaft to the output flange the bolt holes for the center support bearing were about an inch off. I measured a plumb off of the flange to the transfer/tranny joint and compared it to the transfer I just pulled and it measures about an inch longer.
I've never heard of this, I assumed all the cases were the same, and needless to say I'm pretty down I just spent the better part of two days wrenching on this thing, doing all the r&r, rear main, new clutch, the works, looking forward to driving her next week and now this happens.
So, what are my options? I would really, really, really like to not have to pull the trans again. Can you change transfer cases without pulling the tranny? If so that could be an option although, like I said, the old one has a breather hose, the new one doesn't, both are forward shift however. Could I just drill a new hole for my center support bearing, although this probably compresses my driveshaft too much? Different driveshaft? Anyway, thanks for your help!

One shift plate holding down both shifters is a W56 trans. If your truck originally had a G series (two seperate shifter housings) it had a chain drive case.

Thanks for the help! Looks like I had a G in there before as I suspected. Does this mean that I could get a driveshaft from a 91 that used a W and be fine? My new case is a gear drive so I'd like to keep it. Can you shift into 4x4 on the fly with a gear drive and will the front driveshaft match up between the two cases?
Hmmm, just realized this is in the wrong forum...
