Rebuilding 85'

Here is my 85. Bought it with 128K, now has 198K.
Pulling engine and trans next weekend for complete rebuild.
Fully loaded SR5 (22RE). Power windows, Sunroof, A/C, Cruise, Tilt, Vertigo Seats, etc.
Here it is in its natural habitat. I plan a lot more of this soon.
Getting trans from Marlin Crawler, Rebuilding Motor myself.

Enjoy.

Nice truck you have and you got one with all the bells and whistles so that will make it a hard one to find. Looking forward to your build. Welcome to Yotatech.

Ordered HD trans from Marlin Crawler.
Removed engine for rebuild.
Cracked head #4 cyl
Broken timing chain guide, skipped tooth, broken timing cover, chunks in oil pan.
No good.
Crank thrust bearing worn.
New head, crank and full machine work on block.
Hopefully back running mid February.

Great truck. Who are you ordering your engine parts from. Any special plans for the engine? Going to keep a stock stance? Lockers in the future. Inquiring minds want to know

Nothing special planned for the engine. Just re-building it right.
22re performance supplied some of the parts.
Local machine shop that I trust supplied others.
As far as stance goes, I would like to raise it up a little, but I'm not in a huge rush to do so.
Lockers sure, I need to do a lot of research to figure all that out though.
I just can't wait to start driving it again.
The other mods will come this summer hopefully.
The engine and trans are the last bit of mechanical issues that I've tackled. everything else has been rebuilt.

Ready to go back in the hole.
HD trans also arrived from Marlin Crawler.

New Crank (thrust worn out), Head (cracked), Timing cover (broken near bottom where timing chain skipped a tooth due to malfunctioning tensioner), Exhaust Manifold (cracked) Injectors (190k with no service)
With all of that wrong it still passed smog, and then quit.

this would be a good time to put in the later model plenum and throttle body, because it has the better warm up circuitry. http://siestaoffroad.com/tbody.html

i've passed california smog twice with it, and it warms up better than what my '86 4runner came with.

Is there a massive benefit to swapping over to the newer style plenum? And if I decide to, it looks like i can just grab one from the junkyard?

Less auxiliary air troubles and you can snag all you need from the junk yard.

All back together. Runs great! Rear Pinion seal leaks, and I'm thinking its a good time to change the rear end. Thinking of Grizzly locker, would that be ok for DD? and what do I need to do with the front diff?

Sick of thrashing my subi in the city. The roads are a mess out here. Looks like I'm not the only one.

Nice truck. Putney is a good guy for motors, my engine built by him is excellent.

I have a Detroit in my rear axle which is similar to the Grizzly and it's not always the best on the road. Two things that make it not so great are the popping and jerking motions that occasionally happen and the tires are getting worn a little funky. The trade off is never having to worry about the thing off road, as well as how much better the truck will do.
