over heating, electric fan questions and diagnostic help

Driving to Boulder today, the truck started overheating. It's a 22re with a fresh rebuild on it.

-I checked the fan and it is running.
-I checked the upper radiator hose and it was hot, so the thermostat is working.
-The water pump is new, and seems to be working.

The only thing I can think of is that there is no shroud around the radiator.

So, my next move is to try an electric fan. But I know nothing about them. What is the minimum CFM required to cool a 22re 4runner? This is a drive when I want to and off road machine, so it spends most of it's time moving slow.

What do I need for an electric fan to work properly? I am hoping to get this done in the next weekend so that I can wheel and camp for the 4th of July...

Thanks for the help and information / direction.

-Brandon

why not put a shroud on there and see if that helps first?

I thought about that, but the reason I don't have one is because when I replaced the radiator it wouldn't fit like it should. The holes didn't line up.

Forgot to mention. I got a replacement fan that is a oe replacement 2 core. I have thought about doing a turbo 3 core, but would like to avoid the cost of that right now.

I would go with a shroud, it should solve your problem and would be about as hard as installing electric fans.

I ordered an electric fan and controller yesterday. I'll post links later today.

ok, I got the fan installed. It doesn't overheat anymore, but does seem to run at a higher temperature. about 3/4 of the way to the top. Any ideas on what else this could be?

Try adjusting the fan controler so the fan comes on earlyer, you could also try replacing the thermostat, if its old it could be causing some of your problems.

There is no controller. I just have it wired to a switch that I initiate as soon as I start driving.

I once had an 84 4Runner that the temp gauge would read higher than i thought it should, I had already replaced the thermostat so i know it wasn`t that, so as a long shot i replaced the sending unit for the temperature gauge and that fixed my problem. Im just throwing out ideas that might help.

Maybe I will try that. I have a trans temp gauge that I might just throw the sender into the stock location of the coolant sensor to check the temps. This problem has only been in the last week...

ok, found the problem. I had a small coolant leak, which cause a fairly large air bubble in the system. Fixed the leak and with the electric fan, it runs much cooler (even than it did when there was no coolant leak).

It was the hose that runs right over the thermostat. The clamp was strong enough to not leak when it was off or not moving, but when I started driving the pressure would cause it to leak. Which is why I could never see it leaking the fluid...

Replace the hose clamp and the thing runs like a champ.
