Need some help with '85 22RE cooling sys
Greetings Dudes, help a couple of senior geezers here, please.
MY buddies one-owner 2 wd. 370,000 mile '85 is about to cause him to junk it reluctantly. Latest problem is overheated on the freeway on the way to work. He kept going (bad idea, we know) until he could park it at a gas station. He said steam was coming "from there" and pointed to the thermostat housing area (he's not a car guy; I am a little bit). He refilled it and got it to work parking lot (mile and a half or so) next day. Couple days later he filled it again and I watched when he started it (running rather roughly). Immediately water spewing from the small hose that connects at the thermostat housing passenger side And loops up and over and disappears down under the engine somewhere.
Questions: where does this hose go and what does it do? How many hoses needed to replace all coolant hoses? (I'm going to do this on my '89 22RE too).
I told him my guess is probably new head gasket if he's lucky. Maybe a lot worse than that. Thanks in advance. Jim.

If he said its coming from the thermostat housing it could be as simple as the thermostat gasket, But I would start by replacing the thermo and the gasket..
Maybe a radiator FLUSH at the same time would do some good...
Sounds like the pressure got rather high...

To clarify: the small hose failed. Its leaking from the split hose at the clamp. New radiator less than two months old.

I've had that happen right after replacing the thermostat. It's best to go through all the hoses for good measure. Once I replaced one, the others feel the new pressure.

That's the one. The configuration in his is different in that there seems to be just a vertical stub that the hose attaches to, instead of the elbow or fitting in your picture.
Looks like the hose in your picture is bulk fuel hose?
Wonder of there is a molded hose for it?
I went to the toyota stealer and we looked at his parts illustration and it didn't show anything really similar.
Here are a couple of shots
