My 1984 Toyota X-Cab Buildup

OK. Here is my project called "Hell Nino". The "Hell" part comes from the fact that the truck has been through Hell and the "Nino" part comes from the fact that it's small. "El Nino" is a weather pattern that causes problems and storms. "Hell Nino" is a storm.

I traded a near mint 1969 Chevy Longhorn for the 1984 Toyota. When I first got it, the engine sounded like a diesel (busted timing chain guides) and the suspension was installed backwards. I fixed the problems myself and the truck has ran perfect since I have had it.

I wrecked it once when a man drove his 1998 Dodge dually into my lane and we hit head-on. I'm a pretty good defensive driver and I was reading the situation before I got to the point of impact. I was able to slow down and when we hit I was only doing about 15 miles per hour (from 40 miles per hour). The old guy in the Dodge was hardly moving. His insurance paud me a check for $1300.00. That helped for my gears and lockers.

I never planned to take the truck to the level as I have. I wanted to keep the truck "Show Room" fresh and still use it for the trails. Now when I hear that, I laugh my butt off! A true 4-Wheeler that is as dedicated as I am will never keep his/her rig new and shiney. I go by the sound of a "crunch". If it's loud, I'll cringe a little.

Here is some pictures in chronological order over the 3 years I have had the truck.

Trail Damage:
Araz Wash (Picacho)

Actually, this was street damage. Avenue A & 24th Street (head-on collision)

Pumpkin Smasher took a rock above the rear tire. (Quartzsite, AZ)

Modifications:

Gears & Lockers
(No Pictures)

High-Steering

Sliders:

SkyJacker 5" lift (front and rear springs)

Tire Carrier:

Bobbed the bed 16.5" and shortened the frame 8":

Front Bumper:

Rear Tow Point:

Nice rig. It was fun reading the evolution of the truck too. Well done.

Very nice rig. Looks like you'll be having some fun out there.

Watch out for those jumping rocks... heh.

Hi, very nice truck you have there! I'm really diggin' the rollbar/spare tire carrier you have setup. Sweet. My only concern is the bobbed bed. The truck looks a little too short, in my humble opinion, but I can understand what it's for. Looking forward to more pictures!
