Well sounds like you stripped a ring or ur pinion, since you have a 350 it has more hp then the stock axles and gears were made for, you gotta think if it spent most of its life with a 22r then you dropped a 350 in it the axles got quite a shock, they were used to a 4 cylinder. Anyways I'm babling just drain ur axle housing take off the rear brake calipers and slide ur axles out and take out the 3rd and check it u'll know if its broken. Or when you drain the fluid in the axle housing check to see if there are any peices of metal in it, if there are you got ur answer, and then u'll have an excuse to go and buy some chromoly axle shafts and yukon gears! Hahaha let us know what's up

ok...i will try that. I figured the 350 put too much torque onto it...damn. And how hard would the 1 ton swap be? shackle rewelding, different leafs/shocks/etc? if i was to replace the 3rd by itself....what should I get ? the v6 diff?

The v6 diff might help a little, are you running big arse tires??? The regearing thing is what's gonna cost you if you pay to have someone do it.

ok, i am going to look for used toyota axles. which ones will work? is there a certain year i need? due to axle ratio? I can pick up a whole running parts truck without front driveshaft for 400 bucks.

You could try putting a Tacoma rear in it with the 8.4 differential . It seems to be the strongest 8" Toyota differential. But if you like the gas and big tires I don't think it will live to long, also it doesn't help you with the strength of the front differential.

Going to 1tons is kinda a pain and expensive you will need a new front hanger, shackles, drive shaft adapter, master brake adapter, 8 lug rims and if that wasn't enough a dana 60 for the front runs around $800 used and stock then there is high steer and all of the other front axle goodies.

If you are poor be easier on the gas and carry a spare differential.

If you are really broke, you have another diff that will fit right into the rear housing. The front and rear diffs are the same on pre '86 4x4's. I did it on the trail. Works in a pinch and its still in there today. So now I have the Tru Trac in back and boy is it smooth compared to the Locker.

Yea, your right...I may save the 1 ton mod til later when i have money...I found an 85 truck rear axle for 50 bucks everything included. SO i am having that put in for me...damn wish i was home id do it myself, and school wont let me use the lift/shop til i am doing the actual tranny/driveline class. Hes chargin 450 to do it, does that sound good? I am gonna ask him to do my wheel seals up front and u joints while hes at it....SO im probably lookin 600 bucks most likely. But, on the plus side, scored two doors for 50 bucks. Halfdoor time. But thanks for all the help...cant wait to get my old axle and see the farking carnage inside of it...

I don't think its that good a price. But on the other hand you got the rear axle on the cheap.
Personally I would save the extra axle and diff if you have the space. I have a spare factory diff which has allowed me to get back to driving the same day while the busted diff was sent to the gear guys.
If you can pull the diff (3rd member) yourself you can save a bunch of money the next time you get rear end work/upgrades.

Depends on which axle seals need replacing. 4 hours is book time for both rear axle seals, so he isn't trying to screw anyone. The seals are sandwiched between the backing plate and wheel bearing, so it needs to be pressed apart and new parts installed.
