Longfield 30 spline install/clearancing help
So I've been working my way through installing my 5.29 front/rears along with Longfield 30 splines in my 1985 Xtra-Cab SR5. Things haven't exactly been going smoothly, but I've been getting through it one step at a time. In the instructions sent with the Longfields, it says I may need to grind down an area around the trunnion bearings, particularly the lower trunnion. I have a minimal amount of play (1/8 inch or less) when I push in/pull out on the Longfield if I put just the outer piece into the spindle and bolt it up, as recommended in the installation to check for clearance. When I push in, it hits inside the housing. When I pull out, it turns smoothly. I've been grinding away for some time with my Dremel, and I don't even know if it's making any difference, or if I'm wasting my time. Is the inner axle going to keep the outer pressed up against the spindle, thus keeping it from hitting, or do I need to sit in 100 degree weather for a few more hours grinding my housing?
