Knocking noise

Knocking noise
My 22RE has a knocking noise at startup. After a few seconds after it cranks, it stops and runs fine with no noise. After it gets hot and I shut it off then start it again, it does it also. I'm wondering if it could be a defective oil pump. I know it's not the timing chain guides because I adjusted the valves last week and inspected them when I had the valve cover off. I had the engine rebuilt almost 2 months ago by a professional machine shop who builds a lot of 22R's and I don't think it's anything internal. I also run 10W-30 Valvoline Conventional motor oil.
I know the oil pump is aftermarket, I'm not sure if it is NEW or REMAN. Any ideas? Let me know something! Thanks.

im having the same problem my truck wont build up oil pressure over the first quarter mark, the oil pump looks fine and im running 10w-30. Truck tends to want to bog out while coasting to try to stall. COULD IT BE THE ROD BEARINGS? knocks at start up and when warm it sits below the first quarter mark
Update 7-18-09- Still havent figured it out, took out sending unit sprayed it with brake cleaner. Changed oil filter, running 10w-40. Lots of metal flake in Oil

mine did the same thing at start up, but my motor blew up , but my dad said it could of been the rod bearings but if i was you and if its still under warranty have a mechanic look at it, but my motor was old and tired dont want to scare you either

I had some loud ticking (as with every Toyota motor) that seemed to be worse than I expected so I'm running a tank of premium fuel now.
Much quieter and seems to do a little better around town.
I'd try running premium fuel for the next few tanks and you might also try some Chevron Fuel System Cleaner, that stuff works wonders, I've run it in all my vehicles.
You could also get you a can of Seafoam and go to town - also heard miracle stories about that stuff.
I have yet to try it for myself but I will as soon as this tank with the Chevron in it hits the E.

It only does it at startup, runs fine at idle and while driving down the road. It doesn't do it as bad now since I changed the oil in it and put a Genuine Toyota filter on it. I still think it's the oil pump. It sounds like it's not getting enough oil the first few seconds of starting.
TrevanO, it sounds to me that your motor has almost had it. Metal flakes (lots) is a bad sign, could be rod bearings. Mine made a loud rattling noise when I went to shift gears. I let a mechanic listen to it and he said it was a rod bearing. I had it rebuilt and it stopped.

the reason for the metal flake in my oil is from the recent timing chain replacement i did, the driver side chain guide broke and the chain was so lose i could of easily skipped a few teeth thats why i think its either the oil pump or the rod bearings, the motor only has 90000 miles on resurfaced heads

ok, I got you man, didn't know the whole story!
matts65ss, that's what I'm thinking. I talked to a friend of mine who has had experience with these motors, and he said the same thing you were saying. Is yours the early style 22r?
