Head light issues ?
On my 85 4Runner the low beams work just fine. Flip the leaver to turn on the high beams and nothing ? move the leaver to flash someone and they work ???
My thought is it is the dohicky in the column?
What is the thing called ?
Also am I thinking correctly ?

NOOO! Don't buy a new one. If your low beam works, your high beam turns all lights off, and the flash switch goes to high beam no worries:
Pull apart your combination switch to find all the contacts and stuff. What you'll find is that it appears to be working correctly and that it's perfectly clean. What you won't find by looking at it is that the contact strips have lost there spring tension and just aren't contacting with enough strength to make a good connection.
From memory in the low beam position there should be a contact that is in mid air doing nothing, then in the high beam position it moves either up or down to make a connection, in the flash position it moves in the opposite direction to make a connection. Turn your lights on and flick the switch to high beam, you'll see the contacts "connect", give the contact a bit of a push against the contact and no doubt your lights will come on. The fix for this is to return to low beam, and give the contact strip a bit of a bend. If you can see the bend you've made you've probably gone to far, all you need is enough to make a good strong connection.
Cost = $0

Im having a similar issue with mine. High beam and low beams both work, but the high beams only work in the forward position. If I pull it back just to flash the high beams the lights go off completely. Could that be a bad contact point as well. Im assuming that this system is pretty much the same in most years of Toyota trucks so my apologies for posting in the 84-85 section if they are not.

See below for a writeup on the contact fix:

The later model trucks have a different style switch, but a similar fix can likely work.
