gearing help
#2
I've run 5.29s on 34s with good luck. Killer take off, but max speed was about 70 before it sounded like the engine was just spinning too fast (no tach). If I were building a truck on 33s I'd go with the 4.88s.

I have 5.29 and run 32s on the street and 37s offroad. The low end torque is nice but 3300 rpm puts me at 65. The problem with gearing for 33s is that most people normally want bigger tires before the 33s are worn out.

It depends on your original gearing and tire size (but I don't think there were any larger tire options in 84 or 85). On a manual with original tire size of ~29" and 4.10 differentials, then 4.88 would be just about right for 33" tires. If it's an automatic with 4.30 differentials and original tire size of ~29" then you might want to go to 5.29 gears.

Well I used the RPM gearing chart on fourwheelparts.com and found out that I wasn't lied to and my truck really was regeared. I already have 4.88 gearing So now I just need to get the lift that I was supposed to already have and get those 33" tires. I don't think I'm going to want bigger tires than that because I'm already happy with my 31" tires. I'm only going bigger to make the truck look right after the 3" lift.
