Educate me on lug nuts

I have an 85 with the factory wheels still. I have shined these up and they look awesome. I want to change out the open end factory lug nuts as most of them have missing caps and they look too old to shine up. I have a black 4Runner and I am thinking black chrome closed end lugs would look cool. I have been shopping for acorn style 12x1.50 black chrome lugs, but all of them I see say "use with aftermarket wheels only' in the description. Why is this? I am assuming factory wheels may have a different seat? Anyone know why this is?

Alternatively, can anyone recommend some aftermarket black chrome lugs that have worked well?

You mean like THIS, or like THIS, or maybe THESE?

Those are just a few on Rock Auto. Give the site a look. They may just have what you want.

The steel wheels use 60 degree cone seat lugs. The factory alloy wheels use the shank style lug nuts. You are right that the threads are M12x1.5. I used Dorman 711-305 on my Pickup with the factory steel wheels. They are regular chrome, not black chrome, closed end, and same size hex as stock so the factory lug wrench will work. RockAuto has them.

While we are talking lug nuts, a great way to remove any rust and really polish them up is in a pin tumbler. I had some chrome lug nuts on mine that were about 11-years old. I put them in my pin tumber, and after a few hours they looked like new.

Pin tumbler is like these
Rebel 7 Tumbler Rebel 7 Tumbler
they use a rotating drum, with a large quantity of stainless-steel pins, water, and a little detergent. Generally used to clean reloading brass. Works great on cleaning up small car parts.
