Yeah that is a real bad idea. Puts stress on the transfer case and rest of the driveline. No reason to be in 4x4 on the pavement ... Unless maybe it's snowing. I'd ask him why he does that and explain it's not a good idea

Yeah it's extra wear & tear you don't need, and he could possibly bind the gears up. If you read the instructions, or anything on 4wd, it will tell you that in order to safely use 4wd, there has to be some slippage of the tires. So like gravel, dirt, snow, ice etc. Pavement is to grippy and can bind your gears, although I've never heard of it happening.

What it comes down to though, is why?! Why would he want to be putting all that extra wear & tear on his truck and waste all that gas and lose all that power?

This wasn't caused by being in 4wd on the pavement, but here's what could result from gears in the transfer case binding up at highway speed. A less then pleasant experience as you might imagine.

WOW! That is super gnarley. Were you able to keep it in your lane and pull off the road safely? I've never seen anything like that on a Yota.

Yeah, kept in in my lane, and got stopped safely. How embarrassing to be towed home by a dodge.

Oh it could have been much worse. It stayed on the road, and we didn't end up in the ditch. However it happening about 200 miles from home, in the middle of the afternoon in Arizona on a remote highway didn't make the situation any better. Time to source another transmission and transfer case. I am also concerned that the 3rd member may have taken some damage when the drive shaft was bouncing off the pavement. The motor was also tired, and may have taken some abuse when it occurred as well, I can only imagine the amount of force applied to the engine when the transfer case locked up. So I'm looking at an entire rebuild for the most part, and money is not a commodity I have a lot of at this point in time.

Dumb idea. extra wear and tear and strain on everything. you should not be in 4wd unless you need to. Are you sure were talkin about your friend..
He might even get better mpg if he unlocks his hubs and puts in 2wd.

If the hubs aren't locked, the hub is not locked to the axle, and putting it in 4wd high or low will not apply any power to the front wheels (just spinning the axle). I guess if you wanted to have a lot of torque in 2 wheel drive, you could put it in 4 low with the hubs unlocked. If you are needing the increased torque, you are probably in a situation that would constitute 4wd anyways. So I don't see it hurting anything, but I can't think of an application where you would need to do that.

Putting it in 4low with the hubs unlocked should not hurt anything. I would do this when moving my boat from one spot in the yard to another so that I could mow. You just go real slow...

Glad your friend unlocked. could be ugly like the pics above. It happened to me on my '80 wagoneer back in the eighties. Pulled out of an old wheelin spot up in Tuxedo new york, thought I will pull off it in a little while to unlock and blammmo....drive shaft was beatin the hell out the the floor. Unbolted the drive shaft and limped it home about 40 miles with no gear oil, one drive shaft and gears exposed, it sounded so wrong, everymile we were expecting it to just lock up and die but it didn't. .....young and dumb. Loved that truck.

Yeah I have used 4lo with hubs unlocked before with no probelms. Like they said the drive shaft will spin but it's not actually engaged to your wheels / hubs. I also agree it's not very useful unless maybe to get moving when towing something heavy.... Like a boat up a boatramp. I've had to use 4lo in that situation (hubs locked) because the ramp was slick and 2lo was just spining a tire.
