Computer needed?

Okay guys and gals. I have the opportunity to buy a rebuilt 88 22R, for 100 bucks and I pull it. I have heard it run, its smooth as butter. All the external components are new i.e.- water pump, power steering pump, alternator, air pump. The only thing Im wondering is that both trucks have the same computer, visually, not by the number. Reason is, the trucks dont have the sticker left on them. Is this going to be an issue? Also, what does the computer do in these carbed trucks? Mine was unplugged for the first month I had her, dont know why, but she passed smog fine and CEL. What does the computer ultimately do?

Here ya go. It makes sense that it would have some sort of ecm, what else would the o2 sensors send their signal too?
