which cam?

im in the middle of deciding what to buy from engine builders before i start my engine rebuild project. i know for a fact that im going with the rv prostreet head, master rebuild kit, timing chain, guides, oil pump, water pump, etc etc etc. i have a choice between the 261 and 268 cam. ted mentioned that most liked the 261 for a mix of offroad-highway use. my truck will be a dd and weekend warrior. what would you guys suggest? i have a 32/36 webber carb, headers, and exhaust.

I just got the 268c cam from engnbldr.com for my 87' 4Runner. It's not a real big difference, a little more push in 1 st & 2nd and noticeability more at about 3000 rpms. My engine's stock but I did replace plugs, plug wires, cap & rotor (OEM for all). I went back & forth between the 261 & 268 and am wondering if I should've gotten the 261 after all, I may end up doing that later on. I don't do any real off-roading so didn't see the need for it. I bet you'd be happier with the 261-as I'm strarting to think that's the one I should've gotten <g>.
Although in all fairness I'm sure I'll notice alot bigger difference when I get my fuel injectors back from their cleaning. 240K miles and never been cleaned :-/

I've got the 268 Torkr Cam from EB. It seems to help from the 1-4K range. My 22RE falls on it's face after 4K though. I took it up to 5K yesterday in 2nd gear, man, that took awhile

I am in the same situation. I want a cam and don't know which to buy??? 268or 261. I will be doing a mix of offroad and hwy or around town driving.

I wouldn't sweat it too much, both give you low end bump from stock. The stock cam isn't all that bad in the higher RPM range and is really a pretty decent cam all around. Most aftermarket cams for 4WD are designed to give you the most bump from 1000 RPM to about ~2700 RPM. My experience with my EB 261C so far is like Volcom, it's not a radical change on the highway but pulls nice when accelerating. It doesn't seem to be too reluctant to rev, though I've never gone beyond 5K RPM. Thing is, there's only so much you can do with a cam and at some point you start to compromise one part of the engine's performance for another. Ask Ted, tell him what you are trying to do and he'll offer what he thinks is the right Engnbldr cam for you (he might even offer an opinion on the TRD, LCE, Crane and Erson cams). Personally I think the 268 would be too specific for an all around engine, but your tolerance for driveability is up to you.

BTW, for comparison some of the cams (in intake/exhaust):
Stock 22R-E is 248*/280*, UNKN/UNKN at 0.050", 0.394"/0.382"
EB 261 is 261*/261*, 222*/222* at 0.050", 0.410"/0.410"
Erson 268 is 268*/268*, 210*/210* at 0.050", 0.436"/0.436"
TRD Level 1 is 262*/272*, 214*/224* at 0.050", 0.413"/0.430"

so, if the 261 is supposed to be for a mix of offroad-highway, what is the 268 aimed at?

It's got shorter duration and more lift, so I think it's designed to be better at low end. It's probably less good for the higher RPMs.

I believe the specs are:
EB 268: 268*/268*, 218*/218* at 0.050", 0.425/.425"

These help a stock engine and are really required to see much real gain from a more aggressive cam.

>>>*If I may, in my designs I shoot primarily for weekday use since that is the best market.

Specialty grinds I design myself to a specific application. Those can be quite unique depending on the track.

In the profiles we offer there are three goals. For a best mix of offroad and highway with extended RPM potential to redline, choose our 261C

For normal highway/freeway use and towing,. the 268C is my advice.

If a Celica or 2WD pickup, light in weight, the 270.430 is hard to top. That profile was my first design, and it also offers surprising low end response all the way to redline and beyond.

Note that for some all around uses, the stock design works very well. ...*EB

95 22re cam

I have a 95 DX pickup 4x4 with the 22re engine .I have a jet hot ceramic header ,one inch motivator throttle body spacer made for the the Taco 4 cyl but fits the 22re ,cold air intake with K+N filter,Jacobs mileage master ignition system , Jet computer chip mod ,4.88 gears 8 inchs of lift with 33 inch tires .I will be putting 35 inch tires on it this truck is a 5 speed stick runs 3000 rpm around 70 .I have modified it trying to get the most power I can with bolt on products .It runs strong now but when I change the tires to 35 inch I will loose some power again .I have ordered Aussie locker front and rear. What cam would work best at the present it sits more than anything because I am over seas .When home it would be a daily driver Top end speed really is not an issue I want to be able to drive the highway and keep the fuel mileage close to the same 19.2 is what I get now what I want is more low end range for crawling so I do not have to throttle it up to climb but ease up taller embankments. What style cam would be best .60 is fast enough I mostly want more power .New clutch phase 3 is in the box already just not installed yet.
