Brake upgrade
I finally got around to starting my brake upgrade on my 85 4Runner. The thing is, I did the last thing I was going to do first. I put on a dual diaphram brake booster. All I can say is WOW, I have freakin unbelieveable brakes now.
The pedal is real soft, but it doesn't take any pressure to get the front brakes to lock up. I adjusted up the back brakes and it felt better. I got to get one of those proportioning valves now and even up the braking.
Holy crap I can't wait to get the new rotors, calipers, master cyliner, etc. I am going to put 94 4Runner V6 front brake components on the front end. If you haven't changed out the old single diaphram booster, that is a great upgrade.
Anyone have any idea how I can get a firmer pedal. I extended the pedal clamp and jam nut all the way out. I don't know what else to do but get used to it.

Yeah I am using the smaller MC. I just unbolted the MC and slid the BB out and the larger one in. I plan on getting a larger MC, so maybe that will solve the soft pedal. Thanks

Today is the day for me. I will be swapping out the old 85 front brake hardware for some fresher 94 V6 4Runner hardware. That should help me stop a little better. Pics to be posted later.

LOL, nope. I had to unload firewood, four wheeler and hunting equipment from weekend hunting trip. It will be later today. My goal is to get at least one side done. I never get in a hurry. Everything will be thoroughly cleaned as I put it back together. I will be threading the steering knuckles for 1/2 inch bolts to replace the metric ones(that frequently strip out) that bolt down the calipers.
I will keep you posted as I get it done, with pics.

Outsane, my apologies for not getting anything done. It has been storming/raining off & on all evening. I will try to make some progress tomorrow evening. I will have you some "eye candy" for you to check out Wednesday. How about that?

All I can say is well ˟˟˟˟˟. I don't know if the rotors I got are simply the wrong ones in the box, the salesman sold me the wrong ones, or either the 94 4Runner rotors won't work. I can't imagine these being the right rotors. The lug holes are very small. The tips of the M12X1.5 studs won't even go thru the holes in these rotors. Does anyone know if Toyota has smaller studs on the 94 & up 4Runners?
I got rotors and 2 studs ready to head to parts store in the morning. I knew I was making too good a time for it to be true. Taking 2 studs cause I fubarred one of them. Making sure I get the right stud. I will keep you guys posted.
Outsane, I am taking plenty of pics, but so far all I can show you is boxes with the wrong parts. Thanks ADVANCE.

Well the damnest thing has come up. None of the rotors that ADVANCE or Oreilly's sells other than the ones for an 85, will work. The rotors both parts stores carry have the wrong sized stud holes in them. The tips of the M12X1.5 studs will not go through the holes in the rotors. We looked at 4Runners, Truck, tacomas, tundras, t100's, the works.
Someone please tell me what am I missing on the rotors.

Yep I think that is what I am going to have to do. I think I will go back down a couple years on the calipers too. The gap for the rotor to roll through on the 94 4Runner is noticeably wider than on the calipers for 93 4Runner.
I still don't understand the situation with the studs for a 94 not fitting into the rotor at all. That just doesn't make sense.

I used a 90 model 2 wheel drive Tacoma. It had the small 26.75 inch circumference that is exactly the same circumference as the stock single diaphram on 85 and older trucks/4Runners.

86-95 rotors will not work on 81-85 hubs. The 86-95 rotors bolt to the back of the IFS Hub where the 81-85 rotors are pressed on with the wheel studs. What you need is FJ60 rotors. These press on just like the SA rotors. Then you can use 95 V6 4R calipers and pads. Along with these pads you will need 1" bore MC and a Dual Diaphram Brake Booster.
