Black Smoke

Black Smoke
I'm having problems with blowing black smoke on a '86 22R Pickup....I installed a new carb from Kragen Auto Parts, I haven't adjusted any of the air/fuel mixture screws as of yet thinking that everything would already be set. Engine has a 154,XXX miles on it. I bought the pickup from a guy in Pennsylvania, and now it's in California with me. Could there be any other reason for it to be blowing so much black smoke!!!!

Sounds like you're running way rich to me also. Could be a few things like the float level too high, the idle mix is too rich or the jets are the wrong size or even the choke not pulling off. Could also be your timing isn't set correctly.

Hey, Thanks for the reply's......I do plan on smoging it here in Cali which shouldn't be a problem. 85toy, why do you fill that I won't be able to get it smogged here in Cali? Anyway, I'll check my adjustment on the air/fuel mixture according to specs. Again, THX

So if that Toyota was originally sold (back in 1986 or 1987) outside of California, it can only be tested as a federal truck... even if the testing is IN California.
Now as far as MODIFYING a vehicle... well then I do believe all modifications must not conflict with Californian Vehicle Regulations if the vehicle is to be registered in California. Its ok to replace any dried out hoses, just re-route them as per the factory service manual emissions diagram.
