bearing preload

bearing preload
My front passenger wheel is a little loose and jsut started making a grinding type noise. I assumed the bearing is shot, but read somewhere to check preload. Is it possible that the nut just loosened up and i can tighten it till the noise goes away? How do i tell the difference between not enough preload and needing to replace the bearings? Sorry for the stupid question, but it seems like i could tighten it enough to where the play goes away, even if the bearing is shot...

Download FSM and do some reading

Tightening up shot wheel bearings won't end well.

You could tear down the front hub and clean/inspect the bearings and races. Look for signs of pitting or discoloration in the bearings and races and if found, that is sure sign of impending failure. Might only need to replace one bearing (2 sets in each hub).
