Backfire problems
I have an 84 pickup with a 22r. It has stock carb and exhaust. When I bought it, it would backfire every now and then but I was told there was an exhaust leak and that was it. I have decided now that it definitely has an exhaust leak. It has started to backfire more frequently now and I am wondering if the carb could be the problem also. The reason I think this is because it seems to get really poor gas mileage and the kickdown for high to low idle seems to be off. I have a weber that I want to put on it I just need money for the conversion plate. Would a different carb help or could a simple exhaust leak be the only problem. Thanks

From what i have heard weber carbs work well on 22R`s, once you get it dialed in. Another thing you might want to check out is the timming chain, has it ever been replaced ?.

The Weber carb is a good setup on the 22R, my brother has one on his '87 pickup and he's never had a problem with it. I would definately pull the valve cover off and inspect the timing chain. I may have jumped a tooth.
