Anyone with a tach?
Hi guys,
I've had this '85 4runner with a 22RE and 5-speed for a long time, but it's always been tachless and I'd like some feedback from those who have a tach about the engine speed at certain vehicle speeds.
I have 4.10 gears and 30" tires.
I've set myself a limit of 35 mph in 2nd gear and 55 mph in 3rd gear, but I don't know how fast the engine is actually spinning at these points. Maybe that's not all that fast. I know the speed limits in each gear in the owner's manual are quite a bit higher than that, but I don't feel comfortable going that high. How fast can I go in each gear and stay under ~4,000 rpm or so?
I don't usually spin the engine fast--only on mountain hillclimbs to try not to hold up the traffic behind me too much.
Is it just me or are drivers getting less and less patient?
Thanks!
***I found a 0-60 Youtube vid that kind of answered it for me. It looks like 35mph in 2nd is right about 4000 rpm, as is 55mph in 3rd. I think I'll stick to not spinning much faster than that.

Stock tires? 60 in 4th gear is around 3k rpm as is 70 in 5th.
I don't ever go much above 4k rpm 2.5-3.5k seems to be where the power's at and it really revs slow past 4k. I usually cruise around town in 4th gear anything above 25 mph its fine.

Ooh, that's pretty cool, thanks CamTom.
So then, about 40 mph in 2nd and about 60 mph in 3rd are 4000 rpm. Good to know.
I agree that there's not much power higher than that but on a lot of hills around here, it won't pull in 3rd but it will in 2nd, so it can help reduce the rage of those behind me by spinning a little faster and getting the speed a little higher.
Thanks!
