Alternator crapped out

Last night went for a run

got back in the 4runner and about 1/4 mile down the road lights dimmed and my volt gauge dropped to the midway mark. Revving the motor didn't bring it back up. Finished the drive home another 1/2 mile and the needle dropped a little more.

Got home left the truck running, pulled the Neg battery terminal and the engine stopped running. Checked the wiring and every seemed fine, I have added an extra 2 awg from the Alt to the battery as part of the big three.

I want to drop in a alt I can pick up at the local parts store, with out waiting for brackets and what not, and gain some amps. Since I am supposed to drive to pick up some parts on Sat with the 4unner.

From what I searched

90 Cressida will give me 80 amps and will drop in. I just have to bypass the external voltage regulator since I have an 84 4runner.

Any thoughts?

I also think there is a GM alt you can drop in, not sure on what one or how much work needs to be done, but 80/90 amps is pretty good.

If you have an 84 4Runner then you have an external voltage regulator, you will need to do some rewiring to make the later style alternator work, but its not hard to do.

the gm alt is called a CS144 and you can get them built up to 200amps and the are a single wire alt that mounts directly in place if there is any mods to be done it would be to grind the lower ear on the alt down a little but my customers generally dont have any problems
