85 Toyo 22re turbo
Hey guys I got a question I have a 85 22re turbo pickup and the crankshaft bearings came Appart and I found them in the pan the head gasket was done about 1500 miles ago and now I think the short block needs to be machined and gone thru can I use the short block off a non turbo

If it's really an 85 rte, you have one rare truck. You can use a short block off a non turbo but I would put lower compression pistons in it. You will also need to find another place for your turbo's oil feed since the non turbo's block will not have access to the same port as the turbo block does do. I just get my oil from behind the passenger motor mount. It is unfiltered oil, so make sure if you go this route, put a filter inline.

if you were going through the trouble of putting low comp pistons in a non turbo block...just build the block you already have. Unless the crank is totally buggered, but you won't know that untill you get it apart.

I have an 86 rte and an 88 re. The head is the same. The intake and exhaust manifold are different. The MAF appears to have a different OHM reading though. There aren't any risks with using the same head. I pondered the idea of ther "race" head from enginebuilder and Ted himself (by the way, Ted is the owner) said that it wasn't as good as using the stock re head. As NB said, if your going through the trouble, just build the block.

as above, the issue wouldn't be with the head itself. the issue would be with the pistons. Turbo engines have a low compression ratio which in this case is effected by the height of the piston. If you use a non turbo block, and slap on a turbo, the added compression of the turbo under heavy boost will likely cause engine damage. Everything would bolt up fine (exept the oil drain for the turbo as posted above and maybe one or 2 other things) And it would run fine untill you hit boost, then your going to have problems. That where swapping in the low compression pistons will be nessicary.
Detonation would be very likely. Its even possible that you could stretch the head bolts and then be really screwed and have to tear it all down again.

Is there any performance upgrades or any extra things I should have or could have done while block is getting machined and put back together same with the head while I have it off it was already machined and gone thru when head gasket was done by the previous owner 1500 miles ago thanks for all the info and lessons

maybe new cams or something. I think you'll be happy with the power of the brand new rebuilt motor and knife edged crank. Drop some cams in there. I've heard that cams from a 20r are great in the 22re? Not sure on that one myself though. Just word of mouth from a buddy who thinks he knows everthing but doesn't actually do it.
