85 Auto tranny

My 85 pickup 4WD has a auto in it and the OD likes does not come on and when I'm driving on teh highway it goes into OD but when I press teh button on the shifter it doesnt do a thing or even light the light up. Whats the Problem? Auto trannys SUCK. LOL

When you think it's in OD and you press the button, it doesn't drop down to third? You need to replace the bulb and see if it will flash a code.

So if I J=just change out the bulb it will flash a code?

i think he is saying your bulb may be burned out and you are not able to see if it will throw any codes or not. Try changing the bulb and test it to see if you get any codes.

I must be a DA but I'm not getting it. I should change the OD bulb and it will and see if its flashing a code at the OD light.

no you need a little computer diagnostic tool thingy. the bulb (I'm assuming) completes a circuit or something and, if the OD does not work, the computer you hooked up will tell you that.

Thatstill doesn't make sense to me, but that's how I interpreted it.

Replacing the bulb will tell you where the problem is at though.

All you do is find the square plug shown below and ground it. You don't need to use the volt/ohm meter as shown. Switch the ignition on, don't start and make sure OD is turned on. If you have any electrical problems in the tranny it (OD light) will flash one of the codes below.
