85 4x4 500$

i found an 85 22r with blown motor(head gasket) ext cab 4x4 5 speed for 500$, it has rust on the underside but i think its mainly surface and need tires,brakes,altn8r,and some paint, is it worth that muc, the seller said its been sittin about 2yrs and the 4wd worked when it was running, it actually started up using a jump box but was noisy, ill try to take some pics of the truck, frame, and motor. is this possibly a salvageable truck, i know rust is bad.could someone make me a checklist to run through as far as frame rust goes and some things to look for.

First off it sounds like to much for all it needs. For what it is going to cost to fix you can get something better.

If you just want this year truck by all means go for it but it will be a project.

Can you do the frame repair your self ?? I am thinking most likely not or you would know what to look for.

The places to look are around the rear spring hangers from there front to under the cab get under there a small screwdriver that is junk or a cheap one.just press around if it is gone you will be able to push through with ease .

If you don`t see big holes all ready .

It does not hurt to check the bed and cab mounts as well as the floor.

Are you in the rust belt??

unless this was used for Surf fishing and spent lots of time in the salt water you should not have the frame rust like a northern Truck.

If this truck moved to Florida for the sun and beaches all bets are off.

Good luck

did you see the SA rebuild post one member made... the pic with the steering knuckles and front end with rust. this is no where near that, maybe about as rusty as the one sitting on jack stands is what the whole under side looked like

the guy told me no less than 500.00 cause he had some custim drive shaft made for it for 4oo.oo back when it was his hunting rig.said something about he got tired of goin through seals or something. and that its got a toolbox (diamond plated s.s.) which i told him he could keep and lower the price but he refused. also i was thinking of the efi swap, which is the motor i quoted from work. it just dont come with the intake plenum. and manifolds, just complete motor with complete head(valves,springs,cam...etc) with 5 angle valve job line bored and honed.....

If its an '85, it should already have the 22RE. That's the first year they did EFI in the 4wd trucks. At least this is my understanding.

efi was an option.
carb or efi optional.
sounds like a project for sure, just don't expect to make money on it.

plus side, you can rebuild/build like you want it.

2.7 3rz swap is something to think about if you have the coin.

I dont plan on reselling. I ride every weekend.plus .NE. florida has some gnarly trails.and i ride my 08 yfz 450 on the weekends and need something other than my 09 taco to beat on. Im still paying it off.and with a 6" procomp lift and 35's it dont get the greatest fuel economy... plus i think it would be a really kool truck fixed up with some 31" t.k.o's
